The skills gained in ESOL 0350 are further refined to guide students toward mastery of deduction, inference, and figurative language. Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Demonstrate familiarity with a challenging academic target vocabulary. 2. Distinguish between main idea and supporting details in a reading passage on an academic subject. 3. Develop critical reading skills such as making inferences, identifying purpose and tone, and evaluating arguments. Attendance & Tardiness: According to HCCS policy, you may be dropped if you miss 12.5% (four days) of class. Being on time is very important in the United States. If you arrive more than five minutes late, you will be counted tardy. (3 tardies=1 absence) If you are more than fifteen minutes late, you will be counted absent. You must return from lunch and break on time. Make-up Policy: Missing an examination is a serious matter. Make-up tests will only be given in extreme cases. If you have a serious emergency, it is your responsibility to call me before the scheduled exam so that I can make arrangements with you. Scholastic Dishonesty: Giving or receiving information from other students on a test or project is cheating. Students who cheat will receive a zero for the assignment. Repeated incidents can result in suspension from the class. Disability Support: Students who need reasonable accommodations for disabilities should contact the Disability Support Service counselor to make necessary arrangements. Ms. Kim Ingram is the NE College DSS counselor. Her number is 713-718-8420. Teachers are only authorized to provide accommodations requested by that office. Electronic Devices: When you enter the classroom, turn off your cell phone. Text-messaging is not permitted during class. Any other electronic device (laptops, IPODs, etc.) not authorized by the professor must be turned off. Withdrawal Policy: Faculty cannot withdraw students on their final semester roll sheets. If you cannot complete the course, you must complete the withdrawal form before the official “Drop” date. Otherwise, you will receive a grade, probably an “F.” Grading Criteria: Practices, Reviews & Mastery Tests Participation/Attendance Unit Exams Final Exam Grading Scale: 90-100= 80-89 = 70-79 = Below 70= 5% 5% 70% 20% A B C IP or F Calendar: The dates and assignments listed below may change as I see fit.
