Chapter 6: Proteins and Amino Acids
Critical Thinking
1.
Jeffrey is a weight lifter. He has read that if he eats a high protein diet he will build
muscle more quickly. He is 5’8” tall and weighs 160 pounds. He drinks 2 or 3
protein milkshakes daily and includes 2 eggs, a 4-ounce hamburger, and a 6ounce steak in his daily intake.
a) How much protein do the eggs, hamburger, and steak provide?
b) Go to a store that sells supplements and read labels to determine how much
protein a typical “protein shake” adds to the diet.
c) How does his protein intake compare to his requirement?
2.
Jameela is concerned about her risk of heart disease because her father had a
heart attack and her mother is obese. She decides that if she becomes a lactovegetarian she will decrease her intake of total fat and saturated fat. Her original
and modified diets are shown below.
a)
Evaluate the substitutions she has made to determine if each reduces her
total fat intake? Her saturated fat intake?
