United Nations Population Fund/United Nations Population Division MeetingPopulation Policies Planning We are going to hold a public comment meeting on how to manage the world’s population. The meeting is being held by the United Nations Population Fund and the United Nations Population Division. The United Nations Population Fund, is an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity. UNFPA supports countries in using population data for policies and programs to reduce poverty and to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every birth is safe, every young person is free of HIV/AIDS, and every girl and woman is treated with dignity and respect. Representatives from the United States. 2. Representatives from China. 3. Representatives from Latin American Countries (Mexico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Haiti, Guatemala, El Salvador, Brazil, Costa Rica, Etc) 4. Representatives from the Population Connection (non-profit organization) 5. Representatives from Sub-Saharan African Nations (Tanzania, Niger, Zambia, Rwanda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, DR Congo, Etc) 6. Representatives from the European Union (UK, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Etc) 7. Meeting Chairs Representing the United Nations Population Fund and the United Nations Population Division. Your task: 1. Read chapter 8 in your textbook. 2. Form a group and choose a role. 3. Research the group you are representing and the issues we are examining. 4. Formulate your position and develop your policy recommendations based on the interests of your group. 5. Policy recommendations should address populations as they relate to the seven issues above. Policies don’t have to be the same for all stakeholders, but they must be agreed upon by the majority of stakeholders. 6. Cite evidence, cite data, and cite your sources. Make sure to include at least five sources. 7. Start with a 4 minute opening statement. This can be delivered via PowerPoint or handout. Have it up on your website before the meeting date. Meeting Format: 1. The meeting will be run by the UN representatives. 2. Four minute opening statements will be given that express the groups’ interests and initial policy recommendations from each group. 3. Ten minutes of open-floor discussion. 4. Ten minutes of free meeting time. 5. Ten minutes of drafting proposals. 6. Ten minutes of voting on proposals. Grading 1. Research-Does your position reflect extensive research, address the seven issues related to population, display knowledge of environmental science, and include five citations? 10 points 2. Speech-Does your presentation at the meeting represent your groups’ interest, show professionalism, and include logical points/counterpoints? 10 points 3. Teamwork-Does your presentation incorporate contributions from all members, did you use your time effectively, and did you collaborate with all stakeholders? 10 points.
