A.
Specify that lawn chemicals shall not be permitted. Plants should not be located near air
intakes of buildings because of concern that fumes, leaves and other contaminents may be
drawn into the HVAC system.
B.
Lawns: Specify that all unpaved areas not indicated to receive planting be considered as lawn
areas and shall be seeded, , hydroseeded, or sodded by a landscape contractor. Seeding is the
preferred standard for the University. Hydroseeding may be required in areas with slopes
greater than 2:1 but less than 3:1. Use sod in areas with slopes 3:1 or greater. High visibility
areas and intensively used areas should be sodded for immediate effect when it is
advantageous and time is a factor.

Seeding shall be done either between August 15 and October 15, or between March
15 and June 15. The early fall period is preferred.
a.
Turf seed shall be a clean, weed-free mix delivered in sealed containers with
labels bearing the producer’s name and the formula of the mix or blend of the
seed.
b.
Seed Mixture: For Moderate To High Quality Lawns, use a blend of the
following: cultivars of Kentucky Bluegrass (3 cultivars of Bluegrass,
equalling 34 % 33%) 33% Kentucky 31, 33% Finelawn 5 gl. Tall Fescue. The
blend is to be in an even ratio among the cultivars and distributed at a rate of 3
pounds per 1,000 square feet:

For Shaded Areas, under trees use a mixture of 30% Kentucky Bluegrass and
70% Fine Fescue) at a rate of 3 pounds per 1,000 square feet; select 2 cultivars
of Kentucky Bluegrass cultivars from the above list and fine Fescue from the
following list of fine Fescue cultivars:

For Low Maintenance Turf Grass Situations on steep hillsides, use a mixture
of 50 percent Kentucky Bluegrass and 50 percent Kentucky 31 Tall Fescue;
(select from the listed cultvars: Seed at a rate of 3 pounds per 1,000 square
feet.

Lawn Mulch: Specify clean straw, free from seed bearing stalks or roots of noxious
weeds, evenly distributed an approximate thickness of two straws with no piles of
straw.

Sod shall be well rooted bluegrass, containing a growth of not more than 10 percent of
other grasses and clovers and free of noxious weeds; cut well below the root line;
delivered to the site within 24 hours after cutting; and laid within 36 hours after
cutting. Sod shall be inspected and approved by the University Project Manager,
through the Associate, prior to cutting, and again just prior to placement.
4.
Maintenance: Seeded, sodded, and planted areas shall be Contractor maintained
(including watering, mowing and weed control) for a period of one year from date of
Substantial Completion. All planted areas shall be guaranteed by the Contractor.
5.
Require that soil be tested for composition, compaction, and percolation and that
appropriate materials and procedures be used to ensure healthy landscaping.
6.
All landscaping, including the type and location of various plants, shall be done in
accordance with the requirements contained within the University’s Master Plan.
