Stronger emphasis is on critical reading and thinking skills. The goal of GUST 0342 is to teach students to analyze materials thoughtfully, synthesize materials from various sources, and apply this information to their reading. Lab: Willie Lee Gay Hall Rm 118; Wednesday 7:15- 8:30 pm Your lab grade for this part of the course may be based on either or both parts of the following criteria: ∙ Grades which you earn on the exercises or tests in this program. ∙ The amount of time you spend working on the program. (Minimum of 1 hour per week) Textbook: Mather, Peter and Rita McCarthy. The Art of Critical Reading. McGraw Hill Co. Inc. 2005. * 3rd Edition *Note: You should buy a new book to better improve your reading skills. If you purchase a used book; check very carefully for missing pages, excessive highlighting, and pre-marked answers; such used books are counterproductive. Materials: 1 package of scantron sheets, paper, pens, #2 pencils, dictionary, and a notebook or folder for class notes, returned assignments and handouts. (scantrons are available in the bookstore) 1 Attendance: Class will begin at 6:00 pm, students coming in after 15 minutes will be marked tardy. 3 tardies = 1 absence. 4 absences can result in you being dropped from the course. If there is an emergency or special circumstances, please let me know in advance or as soon as possible. Quizzes 20% 30% 20% 30% Grading Scale: The grading system for HCCS developmental courses is as follows: 100-90 = A 89- 80 = B 79-70 = C 0- 69 = IP* *Note: If you receive an IP, you must repeat GUST 0342: You can receive an IP only once in each developmental class! The second time you take this or any other developmental course, a grade of D of F will be assigned for averages below 70%. Session Activities Week One 2/11-2/13 Introduction to GUST 0342 (Read “Important Notes” at the end of this calendar) Student/ teacher introductions. Part 1, “Vocabulary Introduction” and “Words in Context” The Townsend College Preparatory Reading Test- Form D (You will need to bring 1 scantron and a pencil) Introduction to CONNECT- READING (software used for the lab component of the course.) Assignments: (Assignments are always for the following week) ● practice Logging into CONNECT-READING lab. ● Study “Vocabulary Word Parts Chart” in Appendix- A18-20. 2 Week Two 2/18-2/20 Assignments: Complete Chapter 2, “Topics, Main Ideas and Details” Continue working on CONNECT-READING lab.. ● Write a paragraph describing, “What steps do you take to make yourself less threatening to others when you are out late at night?” **Make sure that your topic and main idea are clear and that you have supporting details. Week Three 2/25-2/27 Complete Chapter 3, “The Author’s Purpose and the Rhetorical Modes.” Continue working on CONNECT- READING. Assignments: ● Bring in a form of print (article, book, ad, etc.) and identify the Author’s Purpose. (inform, entertain or persuade) Week Four Complete Chapter 4, “Transitional Words and Patterns of Organization” Continue working on CONNECT- READING. 3/4-3/6 Assignments: Week Five: 3/18-3/20 ● Study for Major Test #1 which will cover parts of Part I and Chapter 1 (vocabulary) AND all of Chapters 2, 3 & 4. Major Test #1 Complete Chapter 5, “Inference” Continue working on CONNECT- READING. Assignments: ● Inference Excercise Week Six: 3/25-3/27 Complete Chapter 6, “Figurative Language” Continue working on CONNECT- READING. Assignments: Begin reviewing for the Final Exam (Comprehensive: Chapter 2- 12). Week Twelve *Final Exam- (Date: Wednesday, May 8, 2013) (Time:6:30 pm) 5/6-5/8 *You will have two (2) hours to complete the Final Exam. 4
