ALGEBRA (10th Ed). Addison Wesley: Boston, 2008.
Catalog Description: Topics include factoring techniques, radicals, algebraic fractions,
complex numbers, graphing linear equations and inequalities, quadratic equations,
systems of equations, graphing quadratic equations and an introduction to functions.
Emphasis is placed on algebraic techniques, in order to successfully complete Math 1314
College Algebra. A departmental final examination must be passed with a score of 60%
or more in order to pass this course.
Prerequisites:
ASSET:
ASSET:
Elementary Algebra Raw Score: 14–25
Scaled Score: 45 – 55
Intermediate Algebra Raw Score: 0–15,
Scaled Score: 23–45
Math 0308: Pass with "C" or better
Credit: 3 hours credit (3 Lecture), and 1 hr Lab
Course Intent: This is the final course in the developmental mathematics sequence and
its purpose is to prepare students for College Algebra.
Audience: This course is for students who require state mandated remediation.
Grading policy:
There will be four in-class exams and a departmental final exam. The final examination is
departmental and covers all the material required in the course. If you score lower than
60% on the final exam, you automatically are given a course grade of F and will have to
retake the course. You MUST pass the final exam in order to pass the course.
If your score on the final exam is 60% or higher, then your grades are averaged using the
formula specified under grading policy.
If your Final examination score at least 50 but less than 60, then you earn a D or an F
(depending on the course average). If you average is greater than 60 you will receive the
grade of D and will be able to take a bridge course at a first start of a semester and get
College Algebra at a second start of a semester.
There are no make up exams. If you miss an exam you just miss opportunity to get those
points. If you miss one exam than your final exam grade will doubled. The student may
receive an F if they have not withdrawn from the course but not completed the course by
taking the examinations.

Homework and Quiz policy:
All homework and quizzes must be completed online using MyMathLab. Homework will
be graded on exam days. While it is not used to calculate the class grade, it will be used
to add up to 10 points to that exam, based on completion and accuracy.
Attendance policy:
The student is expected to be on time at the beginning of each class period. You are
allowed 2 unexcused absences. After the third absence you can/will be dropped from
the course for excessive absences. Any student with no absences will receive 2 points
added to the final class average.
Withdrawal policy:
The last day to withdraw is November, 12, 4:30 P.M
If you decide to drop the class, then IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO DROP
before the final drop date.
Failure to officially withdraw may result in the student receiving an ‘F’ in the course. A
student who officially withdraws from a course before the Official Date of Record will
not receive a grade and the course will not appear on the student's permanent record. A
student withdrawing from a course after this period and prior to the deadline designated
in the HCC calendar will receive a grade of ‘W’. Students should take care in dropping a
course, since the third or future attempt to retake a course will result in a higher rate of
tuition.
NOTICE: State law allows students a maximum of 6 course withdrawals during their
entire college career. Students with more than 6 drops will be required to pay additional
fees. Students may only drop online during the drop/add period listed in the registration
calendar. After the first week of class in a regular term, students must complete a
withdrawal form and meet with a counselor to complete the withdrawal process. Student
must confer with the professor or counselor about study habits, homework, test-taking
skills, attendance, course participation, and tutoring or other assistance that is available.
Student conduct:
Students should come in class on time and not engage in disruptive activities while in the
classroom. Any conduct that is deemed detrimental to the academic atmosphere, such as
cell phone use or talking during instructional delivery, will not be tolerated. Any student
found guilty of such conduct will be asked to leave the classroom until further notice.
Academic dishonesty:
All students are required to exercise academic honesty in all tests and assignments.
Cheating involves deception for the purpose of violating testing rules. Students who
improperly assist other students are as guilty as students who receive assistance. Anyone
caught cheating in an exam will receive an “F” on the exam and is subject to suspension.
The use of calculators, recording devices, including camera phones and tape recorders, is
prohibited in all locations where instruction, tutoring, or testing occurs.
Resources:
The Math Lab is located in Room 300. There are tutors available for homework and
conceptual assistance. There are also DVD’s and computer software available. There will
be review/study sessions led by instructors held during the semester on Fridays and
Saturdays from 10 to 12 AM. Additional help is also available in the Learning Resource
Center (SJAC 116) and through Student Support Services.
