1. Describe and explain the development of human resources management
1.1 Review the history of HRM and the evolution of various theories and
practices
1.2 Group discussion on best practices and which theory best fits their
needs and style
2. Evaluate current methods of job analysis, recruitment, selection,
training/development, performance appraisal, promotion, and separation
2.1 Investigate current recruitment methods including on-line and traditional
methods
2.2 Have the class bring in a copy of the appraisal form used at their place of
work
2.3 Review ways to accomplish a seperation without causing an inordinate
amount of pain
3. Discuss management's ethical, socially responsible, and legally required
actions.
3.1 Review a sampling of current laws and regulations (there are to many to
do more than a sample)
3.2 Have class do a research project of companies and managers who have
been caught breaking the law
4. Assess methods of compensation and benefits planning.
4.1 Discuss the different methods of compensation
4.2 Have students bring in a pay stub from this year and last and review all the
money that is deducted and where it goes and then look at net pay
4.3 Stress individual savings and investment plans
4.4 Review various health plans that could be offered
5. Examine the role of strategic human resource planning in support of
organizational mission and objectives.
5.1 Describe what constitutes a company mission and objective
5.2 Group discussion using students company as examples without naming
the company

Learning Outcomes:
You will be able to describe the interactions that are involved in
the human resource functional areas and how managers go
about hiring, training, assessing, and sometimes firing
employees. The concepts, issues and skills that you will need
are listed below
You will demonstrate the above outcomes through an assigned class
project, 4 teams of 5 students each.
This project will demonstrate both
written and verbal skills by a paper and
Power Point presentation:
1. Develop a print ad to hire a manager
of human relations
2.Write a job description required for
this manager and then a training
program to inculcate him with the
culture of your company
3.Develop a diversity and sexual
harassment training program
4.Create an assessment program to
measure the effectiveness of the
manager after 1 year
5.Write a script for firing the manager
because of incompetence (Are there
any legal implications to this)

Assessment(s)
There will be 3 exams. They will be a combination of True-False, Multiple Choice/Fill
in and Essay. There will be no make up of exams unless extenuating circumstances
exist and you need to be discussed with me prior to granting a make up. Additionally
a class project will be assigned which will consist of a written paper and Power point
presentation. This will be a group project and your grade will be based on the grade
the group receives.
