CHICAGO MANUAL OF STYLE - CITING ONLINE SOURCES
Citations of Sources Obtained through Library Online Databases
When citing articles obtained from online databases, follow the recommendations for applicable publication type
as in print citation (book, magazine, journal, newspaper, etc.). In addition, include:
1. Access date (Chicago Manual of Style, section 14.7: “students are typically required to include
access dates for citations of online sources in their papers”).
2a. Name of the database and, in parentheses, any identification number provided with the source.
OR
2b. Direct URL leading to the source, but only if the database includes a recommended stable and easily
identifiable URL with the document (as in the second example).

When citing Internet content include as much of the following as can be determined: the author of the content
(if any); the title or a description of the page; the owner or sponsor of the site; and a DOI (Digital Object
Identifier) or URL (if DOI is not available). Also include a publication date or date of revision or modification
(if available). Students are typically required to include access dates for citations of online sources in their
papers.
