ADVICE TO NEW INTERGROUP DIALOGUE FACILITATORS (from experienced facilitators: 12/05) Lead by example – explore the edges of your own comfort zones publicly in the dialogue. Be genuine and honest with yourself about your own development. Be open and ready to learn. Your own growth, and willingness to learn and grow, affects the willingness and ability of others to grow and learn. Don’t stress yourself out…take care of yourself. You are not totally responsible for the quality of the dialogue…it is a group product. Be aware of the group’s dynamics. Recognize the mood and energy level of the group. Go with the flow of the dialogue…on and off the planned/assigned topic. Exploring difference is vital but It is okay if there is no conflict. Be prepared for conflict to occur and to work with it. If there is no conflict examine why. Be consistent in communicating with participants about assignments over email. Bring snacks. Have fun! Program on Intergroup Relations, 2007 University of Michigan
