Department: Campus Recreation Position Title: Personal Trainer Time Base: Maximum 20 hours/week Position Reports to: Fitness and Operations Supervisor Exempt or Non-Exempt: Non-Exempt PURPOSE OF POSITION: Under general supervision, the Fitness Center Student Assistant is responsible for providing direct supervision of the Fitness Center in addition to providing customer service to all patrons and guests of the Clarke Field House while acting as an ambassador of the Clarke Field House working to increase student life, campus climate, and promote wellness throughout campus. This position may coordinate, implement, and plan projects of a varied and complex nature and foster working partnerships with several other entities on campus. Fitness Center Student Assistant Job Description: Job Requirements • Student enrolled with minimum 6 units at CSUSM; Preference will be given to students within the Department of Kinesiology. • Nationally accredited personal trainer certification • CPR, First Aid, AED certification (required within 3 months of employment). • Must follow all University and Clarke fitness center policies and procedures. • 2-3 years’ experience in strength training • Strong organizational and communication skills • Lead monthly fitness center orientation workshops for potential clients • Experience coaching or teaching group exercise a plus Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: • Provide instruction based on safe exercise programming principles and standards – including proper form corrections • Plan daily workouts including modified options for people with special needs • Arrive on time for each scheduled session • Provide communication between members and Clarke Professional staff • Perform and maintain confidential records of fitness test results • Promote our Clarke operations and programs throughout the campus community • Attend staff meetings and events • Build positive relationships with clients • Provide a motivating environment by developing a team atmosphere • Ensure that the fitness center rules are followed • Work minimum one ‘floor hour’ per week— teaching classes, assisting members, performing assessments, promoting services as requested by supervisor. Skills Required: Ability to instruct and guide clients to perform exercises safely Ability to adapt and react to all situations in a professional manner Excellent communication and writing skills Prioritize safety and promote proper etiquette in exercise settings Experience with FITT & FIRST training principles Experience administering fitness assessments Energetic and creative with programming Must cooperate well with management and fellow employees Must work well with diverse groups and provide appropriate modifications Hourly Rate: Starting at $11.00/hour
