Teacher: Jennifer Tompkins Grade and School: Felicita 2nd Discipline Area(s): math science social science language arts arts Project Title: Mr. Quiet’s Book of Patterns Project Goal(s): To introduce students to vocabulary that made noise, speech patterns and patterns related to nature. Process and Steps: Students, the previous week, had gone outside and drew patterns they saw in nature. We found spiral patterns, linear patterns, exploding patterns, etc. I explained that everything can be broken into patterns. I read the Mr. Noisy’s Book of Patterns (Modern Curriculum Press) where everything Mr. Noisy does is in a pattern. He talks saying "Hi, Hi, Hello, Hi, Hi, Hello..." Walking he goes "clomp, crunch, stomp, clomp, crunch, stomp.." The students brainstormed words Mr. Quiet would hear on a walk in the forest. Then they illustrated (directed drawing) Mr. Quiet. Then they wrote in patterns all kinds of noise words in patterns. We bound in a book. Materials Needed: Mr. Noisy’s Book of Patterns, paper, pencils, markers Essential Questions: 1 What skills, elements, vocabulary were taught? Lots of rich vocabulary and fun with integrating art 2. How did you assess the children’s understanding? Observation 3. Where could you go from here? The students have daily opportunity to check the book out 4. Other comments: Great ESL
