Center ARTES at California State University San Marcos in Partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education Present: INTEGRATING ARTS INTO THE CLASSROOM Workshops—Spring 2010 Visual Arts-Inspired Thinking Strategies Monday, February 8, 5.30-7.30 pm Arts 342, Cal State San Marcos Learn a teaching strategy that can be applied to all grade levels in a wide range of subject areas: language arts, social studies, art, and science. The VTS approach uses works of art to develop students' communication skills, creativity, visual literacy, and critical thinking skills. No prior arts experience is necessary. This hands-on workshop is presented by Tomoko Kuta, Education Director at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. Entry Points – Using Theatre Across the Curriculum Monday, February 22, 5:30-7:30 pm Arts 342, Cal State San Marcos Through theatre “games” and creative dramatics, participants will explore ways to teach to the Theatre Visual and Performing Arts standards while reinforcing other core curriculum areas. A variety of activities that support classroom teachers’ desired learner outcomes will be presented. Exercises can be adapted for all grade levels. Help students to discover Entry Points for learning. Plan on active participation in this hands-on workshop. Presented by theater specialist, Roberta Wells-Famula. Creative Exploration through Playwriting Monday, March 8, 5:30-7:30 pm Arts 342, Cal State San Marcos Gain techniques for strengthening students' writing and communication skills during an interactive session with Playwrights Project. You will discover ways to maintain a safe and controlled environment as you guide your students in creative exploration. You will learn warm up exercises linked to learning objectives, use improvisation to spark play ideas, strategize ways to translate students’ ideas into plays, link playwriting instruction to other curricular areas, and read and assess student writing. Making Music Monday, April 12, 5:30-7:30 pm Arts 342, Cal State San Marcos Join Jillian Jepsen and Merryl Goldberg as they take you on a special tour and scavenger hunt through the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad. Celebrate the last 100 years of American popular music through instruments, sound clips, and hands-on music making. You will have the chance to experience the Museum’s latest exhibition, “Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog” which looks at the life, vision and philosophy of Dr. Robert Moog and his development of Moog synthesizers. The tour will conclude with an interactive workshop led by Dr. Merryl Goldberg and will explore the music discipline within the Visual and Performing Arts Standards.
