1. Kinesiology is proposing the following changes to several undergraduate courses: KINE 202 – Change course title KINE 300 – Change course number from 300 to 425, change pre-requisites KINE 301 – Change unit value from 3 to 4, change mode of instruction to add a laboratory component, change course description, and add pre-requisite KINE 305 - Change unit value from 3 to 4, change mode of instruction to add a laboratory component, change course description, and add pre-requisite KINE 307 – Change course title KINE 311 - Proposed new 4 unit Kinesiology core course to provide an introduction to pedagogy as the PE option will be suspended KINE 326 – Change mode of instruction to align lab section with other labs offered by the department (different lab designation), change pre-requisite KINE 403 – Change course title, change course number from 403 to 303, change course description, change pre-requisite KINE 404 – Change pre-requisite KINE 405 – Change pre-requisite KINE 407 – Change pre-requisite KINE 495 – Change pre-requisite Many of these changes reflect efforts made to manage the flow of students through the major, including measures to ensure that students are adequately prepared for their courses to minimize the need to repeat. In addition, these changes are based on results from annual assessment and are intended to more closely align courses and content with new Kinesiology program student learning outcomes. In particular, we are expanding both KINE 301 and 305 to include dedicated laboratory sections to support student mastery of these very important ideas and skills. We are also moving KINE 303 (formerly 403) earlier in the course sequence to ensure that students have taken this class and are prepared for the research methods they will encounter in upper division courses. Many of the pre-requisite changes are simply the result of moving this single course. 2. Kinesiology is proposing a new course, KINE 311, as an introduction to movement pedagogy. We have submitted a C-form for this course to be reviewed at this time. The department is considering the addition of this course to the core of the Kinesiology curriculum in the future. However, a P-2 form adding this course to the core curriculum will not be submitted until Fall of 2014, pending the outcome of the discontinuance process for the PE option and the merging of Pre-Physical Therapy and Applied Exercise Science options (forthcoming). Until it is added to the core curriculum, KINE 311 will be offered as needed as an elective for KINE majors. 3. Kinesiology is proposing to remove KINE 204 from the curriculum for the PE option, Pre-Physical Therapy option, and Applied Exercise Science option. The material and activities covered in KINE 204 will be presented in the proposed laboratory section for KINE 305. Because several of the strength and conditioning concepts introduced in KINE 204 are highly related to a knowledge of movement anatomy, it is appropriate that this material be integrated in a single 4 unit course (KINE 305). This model of teaching movement anatomy together with strength and conditioning topics is consistent with the curricula of many Kinesiology programs and it will help to streamline our department’s curriculum. Note that the Health Science option will still require that students take KINE 204 because these students are not required to take KINE 305 and would otherwise not be exposed to this material. In the future, the department is planning to require KINE 305 of the Health Science option and at that time KINE 204 will be removed completely. For the PE option, Pre-Physical Therapy option, and Applied Exercise Science option, these changes will result in the addition of two 1 unit labs to the curriculum (KINE 301 and KINE 305) and removal of a 3 unit course (KINE 204). This will result in a net decrease of 1 unit for each of these 3 programs. Because each of these 3 options was already over 70 units, this net decrease will have little effect on students’ ability to reach 120 units. For the Health Science option this change would add a 1 unit lab to the curriculum (KINE 301) which will result in a net increase of 1 unit for the program. This may help students to achieve the 120 unit total by bringing the Health Science unit total from 69 to 70 units. Please see attached catalog copy for details.
