COURSE DESCRIPTION: A continuation of ESOL 0341. This course places emphasis
on idiomatic speech, everyday vocabulary and listening comprehension.
ESOL 0345 PURPOSE: This course prepares students for college level academics or
workforce study by advancing them from high beginning to high intermediate level in
listening comprehension, oral fluency, active vocabulary and pronunciation.
COURSE OUTCOMES: the student should:
-express simple emotions in the right context
-describe yourself and others
-talk about past, present and future events
-make comparisons and state preferences
-give and receive compliments
-make requests and accept and refuse requests politely
-request help and give advice
-develop effective listening skills
-give prepared speeches
ASSESSMENT: Oral presentations: 60%
Participation: 20%
Final: 20 %
MISSED EXAMS: You have one week to make up a missed test. You are responsible
for talking to me about it. In the event you don’t take the exam, the assigned grade is 0.
ASSIGNMENTS: You are responsible for all work that you miss if you are absent,
including homework. Please get a classmate’s phone number to find out what your
assignments are or if a quiz was given. Follow the syllabus when you are absent. Come
to class prepared! All work is due on the day assigned or 0 will be given. NO late
exceptions!
If you exceed a total of 10 hours absences in any class, you will receive an automatic(W)
withdrawal in all four courses. If you are in F-1 student, this will place you out-of-status.
Every day equals 2 hours of each class you take that day.
LATENESS: BE ON TIME!!!!! If you are 1 minute late, you will receive a “late”. If
you leave class during hours of instruction for more than 5 minutes you will be “late”. If
you leave early from class 5 minutes another “late” will be marked. 3 “lates” =1
absences.
CLASS PARTICIPATION: Your class participation reflects your attendance both in
class and lab, speaking English in the classroom and contributing to discussions.
Students who display disruptive behavior in the class will have points deducted from the
final grade.
GRADES: You must have a passing grade of 70 or mare in at least three of your classes
in order to go to the next level.
A 100-90
B 89-80
C 79-70
IP69 or lower. This grade reflects the student’s completed course, including the final
examination, but couldn’t obtain a passing grade. The option helps students who are on
financial aid to continue for another semester without affecting their grant.
F 69or less. This grade is reserved for students who have not done their work or taken
the final and has exhibited behavioral problems all semester.
WITHDRAWAL: A student may drop this course for any reason up to
at 4:30
p.m. A student may also be dropped for excessive absences until that date. After
, 2010, a student will receive the grade they have earned. College policy prohibits
instructors from entering a grade of W after the official drop date.
SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY: Plagiarism, cheating, other forms of academic
dishonesty are prohibited by college system policy and the rules of this class. Plagiarism
involves the ideas or words of another person(either in whole or part) without crediting
the source. Cheating involves fraud and deception for the purpose of violating legitimate
testing rules. A student guilty of a first offence will receive an F on the assignment
involved. For a second offence, the student will receive an F for the course. (HCCS

3-PEAT: Students who repeat a course for a third or more time will face significant
tuition/fee increase at HCC and other Texas public colleges and universities. Please ask
your instructor/counselor about opportunities for tutoring/other assistance prior to
considering course withdrawal or if you are not receiving a passing grade.

Current Events=Listening to the local news, not allowed weather or sports, you will
present a 1 minute summary of what you learned from the event. Summary must include
what happened, names of people involved, and place where the event happened. Also
must include the result of the event. These current events will take place every other
week. Grade will fall under participation.
