GAIN REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE IN PSYCHOLOGY!! Psych 495 Section 01: Field Experience in Psychology Fall Semester 2016 Class meeting time: Mondays, 11:30 AM -1:20 PM SBSB 4119 Hours at field site: 6 hours per week Course overview: Students will have the unique opportunity to work with hospice and/or Alzheimer’s care organizations. Students will be formally trained in topics such as elderly and end-of-life care, compassionate listening, and therapeutic presence. This field experience is ideal for students interested in gaining clinical experience (especially before graduate school) and for those who enjoy spending time with older adults while learning from their life lessons. Students complete approximately 80 hours of field work off campus. Students gain real-world experiences related to clinical, counseling, and organizational psychology as well as gaining exposure to research. This weekly class includes a discussion of readings in psychology, a series of writing assignments related to the field experience, and ample in-class therapeutic practice in pairs and small groups. Enrollment: This course requires students to have completed 9 units of upper-division psychology prior to the course start date (you can meet this with courses currently underway). This course fulfills the “Applied Psychology” requirement for PSYC majors, or can be used as an upper-division PSYC elective for the PSYC major.
