Course Description: This course is an exploration of salon management and the concepts and skills related to personal and business management. Topics include professional ethics, goal setting, salon operation and management and record keeping. This course is 2 lecture and 4 lab hours (96 contact hours). Upon successful completion of the course the student will be awarded 3 semester credit hours. Course Focus: The main focus of this course is to teach the student the concepts, skills and operations necessary to supervise and manage a hair styling salon. Emphasis will be placed on the daily operations, record keeping, inventory control and supervision. Text and References: Milady Standard Cosmetology Text book and Study Guide 4 -inch Binder and a USB drive, PC Computer/ lap top ELECTRONICS IN THE CLASSROOM: ALL CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES MUST BE TURNED OFF UNLESS IN CLASS UNLESS I SPECIFICALLY APPROVE OF THEM. I WILL ALLOW YOU TO HAVE THEM ON VIBRATE BUT I WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO TALK ON IT ON THE LAB AREA NOR THE CLASSROOM WHILE INSTRUCTION. Course Competencies: This course is designed to assist the student in obtaining the following competencies: A. Create a salon portfolio B. Demonstrate an understanding of salon operations.(SCANS) C. Demonstrate an understanding of salon ethics and goals. D. Demonstrate organizational skills related to salon management.(SCANS) E. F. G. H. I. J. K. Explain how management assists in reaching personal and family goals. Identify effective supervisory techniques. (SCANS) Understand the risk and profit motive factor. Understand the elements and advantages of the free enterprise system. Explain the role of small business in the free enterprise system.(SCANS) Identify and explain the rules, regulations and sanitary requirements necessary to obtain a hair salon license in the State of Texas. Identify and explain the types of salon ownership. PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: A. Given the stipulations for an individual portfolio to be assembled during the semester and completed before the semester ends, the student will use course competencies A, B, C, and D, to complete the portfolio. Performance will be satisfactory if the project produced is consistent with the project guidelines and includes all the essential elements. B. Given the guidelines for a group project to be developed in and outside of class, the student will use course competencies G, H, I, J, K to develop a business plan for a styling salon. Performance will be satisfactory if the plan produced is consistent will project guidelines and includes all essential elements. C. Given the guidelines for effective supervision, the student will outline the basic elements sound supervision. GRADE DETERMINATION: Attendance…………………25% Mid-term…………………...25% Final………………………..25% Notebook/Portfolio……….. 25% GRADING SCALE: 100-90 89-80 79-70 69 and below: A B C REPEAT CLASS Tests and special assignments: Students will be required to prepare a portfolio of daily lessons and projects as well as complete all skill practical sheets and re-cap sheets. You will need a USB drive and a 2 inch binder for this class and you will also have 32 hours of computer time for your assignments that will be due. Unit exams will be done at the end of each unit of the textbook. (Check attendance) ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students are expected to attend class daily and be on time. Any students absent from class for more than 3 days will be dropped from the program. Ten points will be deducted for the first day absent from class and 5 for each day thereafter from the attendance grade. Tardiness: Regarding tardiness, I do prefer that you come in late rather than not coming at all…… If your tardiness is not habitual and if you can enter the room with minimal disturbance for the class. Note: There is no make for a quiz or test, if you come in while the quiz is in process, I will not repeat questions that you have missed. WITHDRAWALS: It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from the program to keep from receiving an "F" for the class. DRESS CODE: Students in the cosmetology operator candidate program will be self-motivated individuals and will stay on task at all times. Students must be dressed professionally and Appropriately in black scrubs (uniform) and black shoes (closed-in) no heels.(lab coat) SCHOLASTIC DISHONETY AND CLASSROOM CONDUCT: Students are expected to conduct themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling the course requirements. Any student found cheating on a test, plagiarizing or in collusion will receive an "F" for the assignment and the course and will be dropped from the program. See student handbook for college policy on academic dishonesty and disciplinary problems. This level of development in a students' training is crucial to their professional development and success; any student that is disruptive or disrespectful will be dismissed from the program. Students on the client floor are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner. Make-up policy for missed assignments or tests: There will be no make-up for missed unit exams. Make-up for a missed mid-term or final test will be permitted only if the student informs the instructor in advance. The student must make arrangements to take the missed test no later than 3 days before the original test date. It should be understood that the make-up test would not be the same as the test given to the rest of the student body.
