CSME 2337 ADVANCED HAIR TECHNIQUES
1 Lecture 8 Lab Hours (144 contact hours).
This class meets on Mondays-Thursdays at 1:15-3:35 P.M
The Instructor has the right to modify the daily lessons as deemed necessary
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Mastery of advanced cosmetology techniques including hair designs, professional
cosmetology services and workplace competencies.
The course is a combination of 1 lecture and 8 lab (144 contact hours). Upon successful
completion of the course the student will be awarded 3 semester hours.
COURSE FOCUS:
The central focus of this course is to empower the student to develop quality designs in
hair while stimulating the creative process. The student will be challenged to perfect
basic skills and competencies and to develop the understanding that time is money in the
beauty industry. Special attention will be given to develop self-reliance, leadership and
organizational skills in the student.

COURSE COMPETENCIES:
This course is designed to assist the student attain the following competencies:



Understand the basic concepts and develop proficiency in cosmetology skills to
prepare the student for entry level employment as a stylist.
Exhibit the ability to use materials and time efficiently
Participate as a team member, serve clients in the clinic and exercise leadership
skills.





Exhibit the initiative to organize and maintain a schedule of daily skills and
competencies.
Identify and apply effective supervisory techniques.
Identify, describe and design current fashion styles incorporating color into
designs.
Identify and describe accepted methods for the temporary removal of superfluous
hair.
Remove superfluous hair by using an approved method.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:



The student will design and execute 5 current trend hair designs and incorporating
the use of color and ornamentation to produce the designs in compliance with
course objectives.
The student will design a hair portfolio of styles produced during the semester,
including hair sculpting, color applications, and hair designs including up-dos and
the use of hair extensions.
The student will demonstrate the procedures for superfluous hair removal
applications by means of warm wax and/or tweezers, incorporating all safety and
sanitation precautions.

TEST AND SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT
Students will be required out their daily lessons and projects (TDLR requirements)
weekly. Unit Exams will be given for each chapter. The students are responsible for the
completion of the study guides.
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Students are expected to attend class daily and be on time. Any student absent from class
in excess of 12.5 percent of the total hours of instruction (lecture/lab) may be dropped
from the course. (including lecture and laboratory time). Students arriving late will not be
allowed to clock in. Ten points will be deducted for the first day absent from class and 5
for each day thereafter from the attendance grade. Students may be dropped from the
course after 5 days of missing class.
WITHDRAWALS
It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw officially from a course to keep from
receiving an “F” for the class. All Regular Term withdrawals dead line is Dec. 3, 2011.
DRESS CODE
Students in the cosmetology operator candidate program are expected to be selfmotivated individuals and to stay on task at all times.
Students must be dressed must be dressed professionally and appropriately in accordance
with the department dress code and must wear a lab coat at all times.
Dress Code is as follows: Black medical type scrubs, Black ¾ length professional type
lab coat, Black shoes (nursing type) no sandals or backless shoes. Hose or socks must be
worn. STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT IN PROPER UNIFORM WILL NOT BE
ALLOWED TO CLOCK IN!!!
SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY AND CLASSROOM CONDUCT
Students are expected to conduct themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling the
course requirements. Any student found cheating on a test, plagiarizing or in collusion
will receive an “F” for the program. See student handbook for college policy on academic
dishonesty, and disciplinary problems. Any student that is disruptive or disrespectful will
be dismissed from the program. Students on the clinic floor are expected to conduct
themselves in a professional manner. Loud boisterous conduct or refusing to serve a
client will constitute grounds for dismissal.

MAKE-UP POLICY FOR MISSED ASSIGNMENTS OR TESTS
There will be no make-up for missed unit exams. Make-up for a missed mid-term or
final test will be permitted only if the student informs the instructor in advance. The
student must make arrangements to take the missed test no later than 3 days after the
original test date. It should be understood that the make-up test would not be the same as
the test given to the rest of the student body.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
Any student with a documented disability (e.g., physical, learning, psychiatric, vision,
hearing, etc.) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the
Disability Service Office (713-718-5422) at the beginning of each semester. Faculty
members are authorized to provide only the accommodations requested by the Disability
Support Services Office.
STUDENT DISCIPLINE
Adult behavior is expected. Disruptive behavior activities which interfere with teaching
and/or learning will not be tolerated, and may result in an administrative withdrawal
without refund.
ELECTRONICS IN THE CLASSROOM
ALL CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES MUST BE
TURNED OFF UNLESS I SPECIFICALLY APPROVE OF THEM. Note that “off”
does not mean on vibrate or mute
TDLR CRIMINAL HISTORY
Every individual who applies for a license with the Texas Department of Licensing
And Regulation is subject to a criminal background check to determine his or her
suitability for the license due to his or her criminal history.
