Approval of minutes from 11/13/15 Executive Committee meeting
Minutes approved 6-0-0
APC Report (Jene Michaud):
Nothing to report.
CRC Report (Chris Lauer):
Nothing new to report
Old Business:
Division Chair Elections (Randy Hirokawa):
There were seven nominations for Humanities Division Chair, four have declined the nomination, one has accepted,
and two have yet to reply. By Monday Dean Hirokawa will deliver a list of nominees to the Division to vote on.
Task force concerning reorganization (Jean Ippolito):
The task force is expected to consist of only full professors. This could be a problem for the School of Nursing,
which only has two full professors, one of whom is retiring this academic year. Some SEC members expressed
concern that without elections for representatives the committee might lack legitimacy.
Motion (Tracy Wiegner): To request that academic units elect their own representatives to the Faculty Congress
Task Force to Investigate Reorganization. Elections ought to be held the first or second week of classes during the
spring semester.
Motion passes 8-0-0
New Business:
Motion to rename the newly renovated old gym (Jackie Pulani-Johnson):
Earnest Morgan was an inspirational dance teacher in Hilo and made dance a major force not only at UH Hilo, but
on the Big Island as such. His innovative combination of modern dance and hula still influences young dancers and
choreographers today.
Motion (Kathleen Commendador): To honor the memory of Earnest Theophilus Morgan by renaming the Old Gym
“Manu ‘O‘o, Earnest T. Morgan Hālau.”
Motion passes 8-0-0
Interim CAS Dean:
The Chancellor is in negotiations with Susan Brown to be Interim Dean of CAS.
