EFFECTIVE DATES: Project Start: 2/01/06 Project End: 3/31/2008 The Arizona milk snake (Lampropeltis triangulum) has been called “Arizona’s rarest snake” by the late noted herpetologist Charles Lowe. In Arizona, the species is known from only a handful of disparate grassland localities, and Petrified Forest National Park appears to have the highest documented population of milk snakes. This project proposes to conduct targeted research on milk snake distribution, habitat use, and relative abundance at Petrified Forest, and then develop the first monitoring protocol for the species in Arizona. This research will benefit future park planning and resource protection, as well as provide additional baseline information on a rare and sensitive species.
