Abstract:
Pecos National Historical Park (Pecos NHP) proposes to conduct a cultural inventory in the
Cañoncito Subunit. Pecos NHP is comprised of the Pecos and the Glorieta Units. The Glorieta
unit was added to the park in 1990, and is itself composed of the Cañoncito and Pigeon’s Ranch
subunits. The congressional purpose of authorizing the additional lands of the Glorieta Unit is
“to preserve and interpret the Battle of Glorieta and to enhance visitor understanding of the Civil
War and the Far West by establishing a new unit of Pecos NHP” (Public Law 101-536).
The park is currently in the process of planning interpretation of the Glorieta unit for visitors.
This project is being conducted as part of the planning effort. The Cañoncito Subunit has never
had an archaeological inventory done with NPS involvement and is the subject area of this scope
of work. Work for this project will be conducted in two components under two separate CESU
agreements. One is this task agreement and the other will be a strategic sample metal detection
survey of 110 acres, concentrated in the area expected to contain evidence of the Confederate
encampment and destroyed wagons, and is covered under a separate scope of work. Results of
the metal detection survey, however, will be incorporated into the final report for work
conducted under this scope of work.
