Abstract: The Wupatki pocket mouse (Perognathus amplus cinerus), a subspecies of the Arizona pocket
mouse, was first discovered during the 1930’s at the Wupatki Ruins. The subspecies is distributed from
the Wupatki Basin area northward to the Echo Cliffs near Marble Canyon. Because of its limited range
and geographic isolation, the subspecies is more vulnerable to extirpation, and is listed as a “species of
concern” in the Arizona Heritage Data Management System. Wupatki National Monument encompasses
the largest area of protected habitat for the Wupatki pocket mouse on public lands. A two year pilot study
is proposed to improve current scientific knowledge on the distribution and habitat of the Wupatki pocket
mouse. The study is intended to address the following questions: (1) Are there any habitat, plant, or other
wildlife attributes that can readily be documented at live trap sites and/or mapped on a GIS that
statistically correlate or explain the distribution of Wupatki pocket mouse; and (2) Where does the
subspecies occur within a larger habitat area on adjacent lands?
