Developmental English Writing Objectives The following list of Objectives specifically identifies those areas of study and skills which will be addressed during the course. Students who successfully complete their compositional assignments and study will be able to 1) Write well-developed, unified, and coherent topic sentence paragraphs and essays demonstrating application of Writing Process: planning, drafting, revising, and editing 2) Successfully address topic, purpose, and audience 3) Identify and apply writing terminology 4) Successfully apply rhetorical modes, a variety of paragraph formatting, and effective introduction, example, and conclusion paragraphs in essays 5) Use concrete , specific examples and details to support main ideas 6) Identify and write the four basic sentence types 7) Identify, define, and manipulate basic grammatical structures; parts of speech, phrases, clauses, and sentences in terms of word function and meaning 8) Define, edit, and use verb forms correctly both in agreement and tense; define, edit and use pronouns by case, gender, and number 9) Define, edit, and use modifiers (adjectives and adverbs) and connectors (prepositions and conjunctions) correctly 10) Identify, apply, and edit the basic conventions for mechanics; spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and manuscript form/presentation.
