The ABC’s of Safety
Northern Arizona University values safety in the workplace for each and every member of the NAU
community. To enhance the health and well-being of community members, each individual needs to:
Act in a manner that promotes safety



Observe all federal, state, local and university rules and regulations related to the safe
performance of your work
Integrate safe practices in each job function and stress safety to those working with and for you
Learn from your supervisor the fire escape routes and emergency procedures for your area
Be aware of resources to help resolve safety issues




Ask your supervisor about specific safety training required for the work you do
Call maintenance issues in to the repair line at Capital Assets and Services
Contact the Office of Regulatory Compliance for questions about chemical/biological/radiation
safety, industrial hygiene, asbestos awareness, ergonomic assessments; contact Capital Assets
and Services/Operations for emergency procedures, fire safety plans or transportation safety
Contact the NAU Police Department (NAUPD) to report damage, theft, or violence
Contribute positively by calling to attention unsafe practices or conditions



Report or correct unsafe equipment and practices to your supervisor or department
Report any on-the-job injuries to your supervisor
If, through the chain of command, a safety issue is not addressed or corrected, report it to the
Office of Regulatory Compliance or Capital Assets and Services/Operations
Supervisors have additional responsibility for safety in their work unit




Ensure the work area is safe, clean and orderly
Ensure every employee has received the proper training and protective equipment for their job (if
you’re not sure, contact the Office of Regulatory Compliance)
Ensure every employee knows emergency procedures and evacuation protocol
Enforce and follow all safety policy and protocol; ensure all job injuries are reported
