Assignment 4 ‘Soul and Container’
Assignment Description:
Make a drawing that includes at least one well-drawn block or cube form in perspective. Add a form, real
or created, that signifies your soul, spirit, essence, etc. The block or cube form can be more than just a
cube, but must be studio appropriate and be approved by your instructor. The various elements that you put
together must work well in terms of composition. This is an assignment about observation and imagination.
Have fun.
Point to Consider:
Illustrations narrate a story. Pieces of art engage and pose questions to the viewer. Make a piece of
art.
Project Goals: Skills to Build On
To continue developing observation skills through the use of sighting strategies
To continue developing skills in creating the illusion of 3-d forms through effective shading rather than
line techniques
To understand the difference between the reality, realism and illusion
To begin understanding the process of selective observation in terms of drawing illusions
To begin to develop an understanding of the significance in the relationship between figure and ground
To use imagination in developing the value variation needed to control the figure / ground association in
the assignment
To demonstrate good craftsmanship in the drawing for presentation
Project Goals: New Skills
To demonstrate an understanding of one point and two point perspective
To selectively utilize selective observation to achieve an illusion of block forms
To make a controlled and finished rendering in graphite on a neutral tone paper
To experiment with compositional arrangement of forms
To develop an understanding of the basic properties of personal expression
Materials:
18x24” sheet of white drawing
6B graphite pencil or higher
sharp edge block form(s) to use for the study of perspective
observed or imagined “soul” object
varieties of erasers

Bring the required drawing supplies on the assigned day
Follow directions in setting up the forms.
Using sighting techniques and understanding of the properties of perspective, do some quick
sketches of the forms the composition on a 12x18 sheet of white drawing paper.
Using an understanding of properties of composition and the relationship between figure and
ground, place the forms effectively on paper surface.
Make sure to include enough contrast between lights and darks to achieve a sense of transparent
forms.
Make sure to include enough contrast between lights and darks to achieve a sense of metallic
(metal) forms.
Make sure to develop an effective use of value variation in the ground areas
When you have completed the study, clean it up and consider the effective placement of your
signature.
