Type of Instruction: Lecture – Lab: We will meet in the classroom 2 days a week Monday and

Course Description:
This course is designed to introduce the student to the principles of client relations
dealing with diverse populations of clients and attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the
occupation of cosmetology and relevant to the professional development of the student.
This course is a 1 lecture and 3 lab hours (64 contact hours). Upon successful
completion of the course the student will be awarded 2 semester credit hours.
Prerequisite: College ready reading and writing

Course Goal: Identify terminology, demonstrate the proper techniques, and exhibit
workplace competencies related to hair design.
Course Student (SLO): The student will compile a portfolio of long hair designs, created by the student
using the Pivot Point design principles. The portfolio should include a minimum of 4 styles. Performance
will be satisfactory if the projects are consistent with project guidelines and all safety and sanitary
precautions are observed.
The student will design and execute 4 texture services using the design principles for
increased layers, combination and graduated forms. . Performance will be satisfactory if
the projects are consistent with project guidelines and all safety and sanitary precautions
are observed.
Learning Objectives: The student will design a minimum of 5 hair sculpture designs
incorporating hair color into the design. Performance will be satisfactory if the projects
are consistent with project guidelines and all safety and sanitary precautions are
observed.

Course Focus:
The focus of this course is to help the student better understand and deal with the
important element necessary to success in cosmetology – people. Since research shows

that as much as 80-85% of success in the business depends on the ability to deal
effectively with people, clients, co-workers, and supervisors, emphasis is placed on the
quality of personal interactions and communication skills.
Prerequisites:
Be at least 17 years of age

Lab Requirements:
Students enrolled in this course are expected to participate fully in and complete the lab
exercises assigned to them. Students should have progress sheet documentation. They
are to read and follow instructions carefully especially in relation to safety and sanitation
precautions. Failure to complete lab assignments will result in a reduction of semester
grade.
Dress Code:
Students in the cosmetology operator candidate program are expected to be self-motivated
individuals and to stay on task at all times. Students must be dressed professionally and

appropriately in accordance with the department dress code and must wear a lab coat at all
times. Students not dressed in the proper uniform will not be allowed to sign in.

The Disability Support Services (DSS) Office assists students with physical, learning or

Academic Honesty:
Students are responsible for conducting themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling
course requirements. Penalties and/ or disciplinary proceedings
maybe initiated by College System officials against a student accused of scholastic
dishonesty.
“Scholastic dishonesty” includes, but is not limited to, cheating on a test,
plagiarism, and collusion.
“Cheating” on a test includes:
Copying from another student’s test paper
Using materials during a test that are not authorized by the person giving the test
Collaborating with another student during a test without authority
Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, transporting, or soliciting
in whole or part the contents of an unadministered test
Bribing another person to obtain a test that is to be administered
Withdrawals:

Students who reduce their course load or totally withdraw from the institution will have

(Class days refer to the number of calendar days the institution normally holds classes ,not the days a
particular class meets. ) The indicated percentages are to be applied to the tuition and mandatory fees
collected for each course from which the student is withdrawing.

During the 1st 15 class days -70%
During the 16th-20 class days -25%
After the 20th class day -NONE

Administrative drops are at the discretion of the instructor. It is the responsibility of the student

HCC Student Attendance /with deadline: Students are expected to attend class daily
and be on time. Any students absent from class in excess of 12.5 percent of the hours of
instruction will be dropped from the course (including lecture and laboratory time).
Students arriving late to class will not be allowed to sign in will give a 15 minute grace
period. When a student has a spilt class schedule student must sign out and leave the
classroom /cosmetology dept. Ten points will be deducted for the first day absent from
class and 5 for each day thereafter from the attendance grade. If a student feels that he or
she can not complete the course you will need to withdraw after 6 day of absent. IF you
plan to withdraw from class you must contact a HCC counselor or your instructor in
order to review a W in that class, if this matter is not taken care of this will resolve to a
letter grade of a F. The only excused absents will be accepted with an official letter

etc)

The protocol for the college in regards to issues, complaints or clarifications that are
directly related to the programs, courses, and classes, is for students to contact the
instructor of their class first. If no resolution is reached, they are then to contact the Chair
or Associate Chair of the department. Should the issue still not be resolved, they would
then contact the Dean of the division.
Repeat Course Fee: Student who repeat the same course twice, are required to pay extra
tuition.
The State of Texas encourages students to complete his or her college by showing up to class
and passing each course selected.
Classroom Behavior: This is a positive learning environment for each student and the instructor,

Make-Up Policy For Missed Assignments or Tests:
There will be no make-up for missed unit exams. Make-up for a missed mid-term or final test
will be permitted only if the student informs the instructor in advance. The student must
make arrangements to take the missed test no later than 3 days after the original test date.
It should be understood that the make-up test would not be the same as the test given to
the rest of the student body.
