Fagbenle, Ayodeji MFC 205 2/19/16 Professor. Warren Response paper #3 Although Vince Lombardi and Pat Summit coached different sports and different genders, they shared a lot of values that were key in the success of their respective careers. Determination is a value that they both shared. Vince Lombardi was determined to become a head coach at any meanings, almost to the point of losing time with his family. His love for football ultimately lead to his wife resentment, and eventual bout with alcoholism. Pat summit was determined to make women’s basketball an official and respected sport. She did this by not being afraid to show off her intense personality on live games. She also tried her best to get her athletes on different forms of media. Another value that they both share is resilience. Both of them battled a terminal disease while still coaching a sport that they loved. Vince Lombardi had colon cancer while Patt Summit had Alzheimer’s. The three main qualities that I feel are important for being a good coach are loving, strong leader ship, communication. Showing love to your players is important because, players need to feel like their leader genuinely love them and want them succeed. Love is something that is hard to fake. Strong leadership is important because all good teams have the foundation of good leadership. To be a good leader a team has to truly believe that you will lead them to success. Not everyone has this skill, it is something that you are born with. Communication is important because you need to effectively communicate with your players on what exactly you want them to do. One thing that I can learn from these coaches that will help me build up my cheerleading team is that you should never give up. Throughout both of these coaches lives, life has tested. They had every reason in the world to give up, but they decided to brush the shoulders off and perceiver. Another thing I can learn from these coaches is that would lead to my success with cheerleading is to develop personal relationship with all players. When players feel that their coach genuinely cares about their total well-being , they tend to over perform past their initial expectations.
