Briefly describe the activity/strategy, providing enough detail so that a colleague can
replicate the activity/strategy.
1. Introduction In the beginning of the semester students have a hard time
communitcating with one another and may have insecurities, especially
regarding fitness issues and/or physical appearance. The reality is that training
and striving toward a particular goal is a difficult task when pursued
individually. On the other hand when people can see that there are others
working toward the same goal and face similar situations of adversity a certain
level of inspiration is developed. Currently in the field of physical education we
are facing a higher level of obesity and obesity related diseases. This fact
remains that people shy away from the clear and certain inhibitor of this
situation, and the partner development is a great way for my students to learn
how to collaborate with others to obtain a specific level of fitness. The ultimate
goal within this partner development is that the students can then relate this
skill to their personal lives by involving friends and family.
2. Set-up & Supplies The students need to only have their goal sheet and
something to write with.
3. Directions So, I begin with a brief introduction referencing their fitness goals,
which were previously established from the understanding about the five
different fitness goal groups (tone, weight loss, hypertrophy, cardio, athletic
development). I have them then find a partner that shares a similar fitness goal
for the semester. I give the parners a twenty minute opportunity to talk to each
other and get to know each other and their individual goals. The next step is for
the partners to start to work out together. The first assisignment is for them to
start the pre-course testing and evaluations. They are to be very interactive
with one another by counting the repetitions and counting the time for each
exercise.
What worked well? The students worked well together and were able to relate with one
another really well. The partners had a good time talking to each other and sharing
goals. The students' eyes were opened to fitness training by sharing the adversity that
they face.
What would you change? I would make this a two-day assisgnment to allow for more time
for the students to work out and get to know eachother. The problem is that I need to
create more partner-oriented exercises because after the first week I found that
students started to almost slpit from their groups because the exercise started to
become more individually based. I found this to be slightly disappointing because I
wanted the students to experience more partner-based training. So, I will start this
earlier and start to stress the utlization of their partner.
Would you use the activity/strategy again? Why or why not? Yes. This activity allows for a
perfect class enviroment for physical education because the idea is to have a lifetime
fitness lifestyle.
Please describe any student learning and/or changes that you observed after the
implementation of the activity/strategy. I found that the students became much more
comfortable with exercises and expressing their goals with one another.
