Strategic purpose statement
This qualification is intended for individuals who are working in
office-based clinical support to progress their careers within the
healthcare sector.
It provides the New Zealand public with individuals who are able
to transcribe and edit healthcare documents to prescribed
procedures and auditable quality standards.
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the healthcare
sector with graduates capable of operating as medical
transcriptionists or editors.
Outcome Statement
Graduate profile
Graduates will be able to:

Apply knowledge of English language, medical language,
style and grammar specific to medical transcription and
editing, to ensure conformity and accuracy

Apply technologies used in healthcare documentation to
ensure secure and confidential healthcare records

Apply knowledge of standards and regulations relating to
healthcare records

Transcribe and edit healthcare dictation to develop proficient
and secure transcribed records.
Education pathway
This certificate can lead to the qualification Registered
Healthcare Documentation Specialist (RHDS), and/or Certified
Healthcare Documentation Specialist (CHDS).
Employment pathway
Graduates of this certificate will have the skills and knowledge to
work as a medical transcriptionist or editor in the healthcare
sectors.
Additional opportunities in employment include work as medical
coders, audio typists, medical receptionists, medical or clinical
support roles.

Qualification award
This qualification can be awarded by any education organisation
which has an approved programme of study or industry training
programme leading to the qualification.
Evidence requirements for
assuring consistency
Evidence may come from:
 Regular monitoring of trainee progression within either the
TEO or the workplace including liaising with employers,
teaching staff, training supervisors, and industry managers
about the value of the training, graduates, and qualification, to
the business.
 Feedback from major employers, employers' associations,
and relevant industry bodies to ensure their members
involved in the medical transcription industry are satisfied with
the qualification graduates.
 Regular cross-industry meetings (Industry Advisory Groups)
where the changing training needs of the industry can be
discussed in light of technology changes, workplace
practices, and graduate capabilities.
 Independent surveys of graduates and employers to
determine if the graduates are appropriate for the workplace.
 Providing an alignment matrix of programme outcomes or unit
standards against the qualification outcomes.

will be designated to be discontinued.
