Course Description:
This course is an overview of the skills and knowledge necessary for the instruction of
cosmetology students. This course is a combination of Lecture and Written assignments
(typed), using Technology and Educational Aids related to TDLR curriculums, Course
Outlines, Calendars, Work Ethics, Career Readiness and the preparation a
Resume/Portfolio. Upon completion of the course the student will receive 128 clock
hours.
Course Focus:
The focus of this course is to introduce the student to the methods and techniques of
formulating informational plans for students relative to cosmetology. Special attention
will be given to: Presentation of opening a beauty school, preparing a vision, mission and
motto statement; Also preparation of TDLR curriculum, a syllabus, creating a resume for
employment and demonstration of team work among instructors to create a positive role
in the teaching profession.
During this course:
All students must study for and take the H.C.C.S. Career Readiness Exam. A copy will be
required for your portfolio and school file.

Course Competencies:
Students will be able to identify rules and regulations the school and the state department
TDLR.
Show the ability to write curriculums and a syllabus
Demonstrate the use of Technical and Educational Aids in the classroom.
Identify the basic principles of classroom/clinic management.
Identify the different teaching methodologies used in instruction of skills based programs,
and course planning development.
Identify the values and advantages of lesson planning.
Perform the key concepts in effective business management.
Pre-Requisites:
High school diploma
Current Texas operator license
3 years of experience working as a stylist in a licensed hair salon
Pass the Entrance test/in place of a college transcript
Present letters of recommendation
Write a letter of intent to Mrs. Greene/Mrs. Martinez
Dress Code:
All student teachers must wear black attire, with a white lab coat and closed-in black
shoes. The white lab coat is mandatory. Student must be presentable at all times with
their face and hair and nails clean. The student should wear make-up in a fashionable
manner.
No leggings, skinny jeans or miniskirts allowed. No bare legs. No stilettos.

Given the objectives and guidelines for the course, the student will use
competencies A, B, and C, to develop a personal philosophy statement on
teaching.
Given the guidelines and objectives for an individual project, the student will
use competencies D and E to design a daily lesson plan portfolio that will
accommodate the various learning styles of the students.
Given the guidelines and objectives for effective time management, the

Withdrawals:
It is the students’ responsibility to withdraw from the school and the program to keep
from owing a balance for the teaching experience. The school will terminate the student’s
attendance and report the earned hours to the Texas Board of Cosmetology. Last day to
drop 03/31/22014 at 4:30
Make-Up Policy:
There are not make up test for the weekly exams. Mid-term and finals can be taken if
missed. The student must notify the instructor in advance and must make arrangements to
take the test at least 2 days before the original test is given.
Tests and Special Assignments:
Students will be tested at the end of each unit/chapter. Test will consist of essay,
completion, true/false, and other type questions. Students will be required to complete
lesson plans for each theory and skill that is taught in class.
Special Assignments:
1. Prepare a display for student learning. Prepare a lesson plan that includes the use
of Technology or Educational Aid for a subject that you will teach to the
freshmen students (after Mid-Term). All student teachers must teach a 20 minute
class to our freshmen level. Mrs. Bassett will assign the subject matter. The
freshmen will grade each of you on your presentation. The date will be assigned.
2. Students must create a name, and floor plan for their beauty school, and present
a10 page business plan for their business. The funds required for this business will
be at least $250.000.00 (your money) and you will have to apply for a loan from
an institution in the state of Texas. You will decide how much you need to operate
your school with 25 students. Use a Courier 12-font, double space and do a spell
check.
3. Students will write a Cover page and Resume with Portfolio, to be turned in with
Business plan. The cover page must include the name and number of this course,
instructor’s name, student’s name, due date. (HCCS Library and Writing Center is
on the third floor with valuable information)
The due date for this assignment is April 16, 2014. Project will be considered late if
turned in after 8:30 AM. (Late papers = minus a letter grade each day)

REMEMBER: Make-up exams for the weekly test are not permitted. Mid-terms and
final make-up test will be permitted only if the student informs the instructor at least 2
weeks in advance and must make arrangements to take the test no later than 2 days after

Academic accommodations will be provided only after the student has properly
registered for services through designated services staff.
The student is advised to contact the Admission Office at least 30 days prior to the
beginning of the term (spring or fall).
Attendance Policy:
Students are expected to attend class on a daily basis as enrolled. Any student absent
more than 3 days will be reported to the attendance office and he/she may be terminated
from the program. Students arriving late to class (after 15 minutes) will be marked tardy
and lose 2 points toward professional grade.
Excused absences are:
Death of an immediate family member (Mother, father, son, daughter and
grandparents)
Student or their child is hospitalized
Student has jury duty (does not include a court appointed date)
Students may be absent from classes for the observance of a religious holiday and will be
allowed to complete an assignment scheduled for that day, or take an examination within
a reasonable time as established by the instructor.
First day absence: verbal warning
Second day: written warning
Third day: E-Alert (Advisor) and student may be placed on probation
Fourth day: termination from course
This is a fast pace course for we only have 16 weeks of instruction per semester.
Classroom Conduct and Scholastic Dishonesty:
Student Instructors will conduct themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling the
course requirements. Students in the instructor’s program are expected to conduct
themselves in a mature and adult manner. Students who cannot respect others or
themselves will be dismissed from the program. Students giving false information
enrolling for the courses at HCC will be dismissed from the program.
Students cheating on a test, plagiarizing or in collusion will receive an “F” for the
assignment and the course and will be dropped form the program.
HCC has a Zero tolerance policy. Should the campus police (they are real police) be
called, you will be removed from the classroom and may receive a ticket and a fine
of $500.00!
Cell phones are to be put on vibrate or turned off position. Should you have to
answer or make a call you must leave the classroom. No hands free or head gear
allowed.
