Course Description Students will gain knowledge on applications and procedures necessary for salon development. Topics include professional management skills, salon operation, and record keeping. This course is an exploration of salon management and the concepts and skills related to personal and business management. Topics include professional ethics, goal setting, salon operation and management and record keeping. This course is 2 lecture and 4 lab hours (96 contact hours). Upon successful completion of the course the student will be awarded 3 semester credit hours. Course Focus The main focus of this course is to teach the student the concepts, skills and operations necessary to supervise and manage a hair styling salon. Emphasis will be placed on the daily operations, record keeping, inventory control, and supervision. End of Course Outcomes Create a salon portfolio; and demonstrate organizational skills related to salon operation and management and other in-class activities by passing the final examination. Hand in an industrial portfolio with all documentation of operating a salon business, at the end of the semester. Schedule and book appointments Website studies and purchasing equipment CSME 2343 Salon Development 2 Houston Community College Cosmetology Program STATEMENT OF FOUNDATION SKILLS AND WORKPLACE COMPETENCIES (SCAN SKILLS) A study was conducted for the Department of Labor by the American Society for Training and Development which identified the seven skills United States employers want most in entry level employees. These skills are motivation to learn, basic skills, communication, teamwork, critical thinking, career development and leadership. HCCS is committed to preparing every student with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in today’s dynamic work environment. Towards the end of the course, skills will be included in this session. Testing and assessing these skills will vary according to the individual instructor. The student will develop a business plan, and a brochure for a styling salon that includes all essential elements provided by the instructor. The student will create an operations manual that incorporates the basic elements of sound supervision in operating a salon business. The student will complete forms for booking appointments, depositing cash/checks, creating deposit slips for the bank, endorsing checks received from a business loan, The Cosmetology Department does not guarantee that each student will acquire each learning competency nor acquire all the hours necessary to complete the program within a specified period of time. Courses are scheduled at the discretion of the department and the availability of qualified faculty. GRADE DETERMINATION To be determined by the individual instructor. CSME 2343 Salon Development 4 Houston Community College Cosmetology Program ATTENDANCE POLICY Students are expected to attend class daily and be on time. Any student absent from class in excess of 3 days, information will be submitted to EAlert(HCCS) then on the 4th day the student will and can be terminated from the cosmetology program. Student(s) may also be dropped from the course if there are excessive trades. (Tardiness is any time 15 minutes after class schedule). Students arriving late to school will not be allowed to ask questions on subjects that were discussed prior to arriving to class. WITHDRAWALS It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw officially from a course to keep from receiving an "F" for the class. DRESS CODE Students in the cosmetology operator candidate program are expected to be self-motivated individuals and to stay on task at all times. Students must be dressed professionally and appropriately in accordance with the department dress code: Black medical scrubs, black lab coat, and black shoes (nursing type) no sandals or backless shoes, hose or socks must be worn. SCHOLASTIC DISHONETY AND CLASSROOM CONDUCT Students are expected to conduct themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling the course requirements. Any student found cheating on a test, plagiarizing or in collusion will receive an "F" for the assignment and may be dropped from the program. See HCC on-line for college policy on academic dishonesty and disciplinary problems. This level of development in a students' training is crucial to their professional development and success; any student that is disruptive or disrespectful may be dismissed from the program. Make-up policy for missed assignments or tests: There will be no make-up for missed weekly exams. Make-up for a missed mid-term or final test will be permitted only if the student informs the instructor in advance. The student must make arrangements to take the test at least 3 days before the original test date. It should be understood that the make-up test would not be the same as the test given to the rest of the student body.
