Tulsa Union State One Act Competition Information We expect our students to uphold the outstanding reputation Southmoore Theatre has been creating. Please read the rules regarding the following topics. BAG CHECK-IN: Friday Oct 4: 8:15 Bring bags to Room M107 Bags may be checked for contraband. MONEY: Spending money is at the family’s discretion. However, students will need enough money for 2 lunches and 2 dinners. We may do an activity on Friday evening. ELECTRONICS (iPods, etc.): iPods (and other personal mp3/music players) are allowed, with earphones ONLY. IPods will be used on the bus rides to Tulsa and back home ONLY. IPods will not be used anytime during time on the Tulsa Union Campus Portable DVD players are NOT permitted on the trip. Video game systems are NOT permitted on the trip. CELL PHONES: Students who have cell phones are allowed to bring them on the trip, but We must have your cell phone number. Students may only use cell phone for school appropriate purposes. Cell Phones are not to be used on the Tulsa Union Campus at anytime backstage. Cellphones must be used in good taste and must never be a disruption to any performance or audience member. (if I notice any behavior that I would deem inappropriate or abusive use of your cell phone or iPod, I will take it and you will not get it back until I give it to your parent when we return) b PROHIBITED ITEMS (include, but are not limited to): Energy/Power drinks (Red Bull, Monster, etc.) Pixie sticks or other pure-sugar snacks Camcorders, video recorders, Flip cameras, etc. Knives, firecrackers, or any other item deemed dangerous are forbidden. Water guns, silly string, etc. ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES: The possession/use of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited. The possession/use of tobacco products (including matches, lighters) is strictly prohibited. Any Vapor product If any adult on the trip even suspects that a student is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the student must be reported to authorities immediately. Any student found under the influence will be disciplined according to the school handbook. Any student who is found in violation of this policy WILL BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY. MEDICATION: Students who need to carry any medication (prescription or over the counter) will need to have a list turned in signed by a parent stating the medication, dosage, and reason. DRESS CODE: (We have one chance to make a good first impression) If you do not have any clothing that fits these guidelines, we will find some in the costume room for you. :) All clothing must be clean and neat! Friday: We will be dressed neatly as we go to our spike and work with the guest judge. **We may wear a Southmoore shirt if we can come up with them** No sagging pants or sagging warm-ups No short shorts… Must be mid thigh or don’t wear shorts No skin tight pants No miniskirts. Mid thigh or don’t wear a skirt You may wear warm up pants if they fit appropriately and don’t look sloppy. No clothing with holes, paint, stains, etc. This dress code does not permit (but is not limited to): halter-tops, midriff shirts, exposed stomachs, t-shirts with offensive/inappropriate language, or suggestive clothing. Saturday: You will wear your If all the sky were paper shirt. Jeans, nice pants, colored jeans, long walking shorts, capri pants, skirt. No warm-ups. We will not dress down after we perform. If at any time the director feels you are inappropriately dressed, you will be asked to change immediately. If you are unsure about an item of clothing, leave it home! . ON THE BUS: YOU MUST BE ON THE BUS ON TIME!!! You may bring one small backpack on the bus (they will be checked, along with your luggage bag, before we leave). Music listened to with earphones only. Students must remain seated while the bus is moving, one student per seat. Keep your bus clean! There will be garbage bags on the bus – use them! NO TALKING while teachers or bus drivers are speaking or taking roll. All students must ride on their assigned bus COSTUMES/ PROPS: Actors are assigned specific costumes. These costumes will include socks, shoes, hats, eyewear, etc. These items will be carried in a garment bag labeled with the actor’s name. The actor is responsible to get his costume bag and all his assigned items to the compeititon and back to Southmoore. It is his duty to store the costume in the costume area assigned to him both at Tulsa, Regionals, State, and at SHS for the Dec performance. Actors are responsible to make sure that costumes are pressed and ready for each performance. Stage Crew: Each Stage Crew will be assigned a prop, a stage piece, a technical piece, and water chest. Etc. The stage crew is responsible to get his /her assigned items to the competition and back to Southmoore. It is his duty to store the item in the area assigned to him/her both at Tulsa, Regionals, State, and at SHS for the Dec performance. IN THE HOTEL: The hotel is where we are to get the proper rest so that we can compete to our best the Find the Fire Exit First: find the path to the nearest exit in case of fire or emergency. STUDENTS MUST RESPECT THE RIGHTS OF OTHER HOTEL GUESTS! The hotel is not only for your enjoyment. Keep this in mind at all times. No running or yelling will be tolerated. Ever. Do not go into the hall unless you are dressed appropriately. A curfew will be set. I will tape you in. If the tape is broken, you will be disciplined for leaving the room during the night. You are to be in bed, lights and TV off, within 45 minutes after curfew. Room checks will be made at night and in the morning.. Students must not leave hotel room or go to any other part of the hotel without specific directions from Baugus. Parents will be notified of assessed charges for any damage to the room Girls are not allowed in boy’s rooms and boys not in girl’s rooms. Couples are not allowed to room together. During the Free time on Friday: Students of opposite gender will not visit, play cards, or entertain guests in their hotel rooms without the door being propped open. Be certain that your hotel room door is locked and don’t forget your key when you leave. Your door should be securely locked before you retire and opened only to coach. Students are not permitted to leave the hotel. Students are not to change rooms without Baugus permission. No pay TV is allowed. Cable movie channels will be blocked in students’ rooms. No room service is allowed. Internet service /Wi-Fi is not to be used 45 minutes after curfew. Pizza delivery is not allowed after curfew. If we are able to swim, you will need a modest bathing suit and cover-up. Not sure if we will be able to swim or not. BEHAVIOR AT THE COMPETITION: We are here to get meet other schools and develop theatre communities. We will not talk about any school, student, facility, teacher, performance, audience member or judge while in the presence of anyone except SHS cast and crewmembers. That means that we will not discuss in front of our fans as well. We will refrain from any and all profanity at all times. Think before you speak. As a cast and crew, we will applaud all efforts by all other schools. We do not need to give a standing ovation to any school except those from Moore but we will enthusiastically applaud the successes of all other schools. We will take our successes with humbleness, humility and without arrogance. We will not let the success overshadow the reason we perform… to tell a story and to impact others and ourselves. We will take our losses graciously and remember that we perform for the love of performing. We will evaluate the experience honestly and not blame others. We will be in all shows. We will be a great audience. We will be respectful. TULSA UNION RULES The following instructions are offered to assist you and to provide a positive environment for everyone involved: Our lobby, scene shop, dressing rooms, backstage rest rooms, and Studio theater are sound isolated and normal conversation is possible there even when a show is onstage, but loud noise in the backstage hallways and the hallway south of the UPAC can sometimes be heard in the auditorium. Please be considerate. Food and drink are not permitted inside the Union Performing Arts Center auditorium. Food and drink are permissible in the lobby and can be consumed in the dressing spaces if your group will be responsible for the cleanup of your trash and spills. Students should not enter the classroom areas located north of the UPAC, the gym, or the gymnastics area. Take responsibility for securing your group’s valuables. Do not leave purses, billfolds, or other valuables in the dressing rooms. Entrances into the UPAC seating areas are not permitted during performances. Audience members should not exit until the production is concluded. Loud conversation inside the UPAC is not permitted between presentations. Please allow the judges the opportunity to make their decisions and write their comments without distraction. Students should go to the lobby to visit. ONE ACT RULES YOU MAY HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT A school may video tape their own production but not the production of other schools without the coaches’ permission. The main emphasis of the contest is based on the acting ability of the students in the cast and how they perform before an audience Oral critiques should be done in a private situation with only the directors, cast and crew present. Use of any and all flames (matches, lighters, etc.) and weapons in one-act must be in compliance with state law, disclosed at time of entry to the tournament director, and subject to the approval of the host contest site. A. Trophies 1. State Trophies: First, second and third place trophies will be awarded in each classification 2.Outstanding Stage Crew/Tech Performance: Trophy will be determined by score on 3 judges ballots of high score. Score ties will be broken by judges preference. 3. Top boy and girl All star cast: two trophies (one for each gender) will be awarded to the top boy and top girl determined by judges. 4. Outstanding Set Award: Determined by judges preference 5. Outstanding Costumes Award: Determined by judges preference 6. Outstanding Poster/ Program Design: Determined by judges preference. 7. Outstanding Direction in a Play: Determined by scores determined by judges. 8. Most Outstanding Company: Determined by judge on preset day. (this award is given to the company that was most “directable” and easy to work with) 9. Fan Favorite: Determined by text at the end of the day (not able to vote for your own show 10. Charity Award: Determined throughout the day. Each show will choose one charity and audience members will place money in the bins with their charity and show name. The most amounts will win the award. GENERAL REMINDERS: Students participating in the competition must go on the buses. They may not drive their own cars, unless approved by an administrator. Students are required to stay with the school team or club at all times, including the ride to and from the event. Students may ride home with parent/guardian only if the parent or guardian has made those arrangements with Baugus before the trip. Students will be held responsible for any damage they cause at any time. Absolutely no bus changes! Water and snacks will be provided during the bus rides to Tulsa. Answer promptly when head-count is taken. Your director must know where you are at all times! Students are not permitted to leave the school function to visit parents or relatives without written permission from the parent /guardian prior to the trip. Behavior of students will be a reflection of Southmoore High School Theatre, our school, and our community as a whole. Please conduct yourself with proper behavior during the entire trip. If you have any prohibited items, you won’t even make it onto the bus A positive image is conveyed in the way our students dress and behave! Anything you need from home for your character jeans sweatpants for the motel (or other comfortable, athletic-type pants) sweater or sweatshirt (for the motel) Long shorts T-shirts (try to bring Southmoore or Theatre shirts) underwear Deodorant Soap Shampoo/Conditioner (trial size is best) Toothbrush Toothpaste (again, trial size is best) Modest bathing suit and cover-up Games that could be played at the motel. Nothing of value: There will be no secured sights at Tulsa Union. Keep in mind we are only going for 1 night.
