EL CAMINO COLLEGE Office of the Vice President – Academic Affairs NOTES – October 12, 2009 Assessment of Learning Committee (ALC) Present: R. Bergeman, L. Gallucci, I. Graff, O. Hadley, K. Holt, M. Kline, J. Shankweiler, C. Subramaniam, J. Simon, K. Whitney 1. Ray Lewis’ SLOs for Division Committees A proposal for division SLO committees was presented as an information item on behalf of R. Lewis. Discussion will be held at the next meeting. 2. Reports on Division SLO Committees Fine Arts/K. Whitney -- Committee will meet on October 15 and plans to review updated timelines. -- Email was sent to all division SLO committee members to make sure they are all aware that an SLO needs to be developed for every course. -- will discuss including SLOs on syllabi -- will discuss communication with adjunct faculty so that they also know they will eventually be responsible for assessments. Natural Sciences/J. Shankweiler -- Committee met in September and reviewed courses that still need SLOs. -- Committee will meet again next week and plans to discuss how to define core levels to fit program level SLO. Humanities/R. Bergeman -- Committee met last week and decided that individual departments would meet rather than the whole division. The whole division will also continue to meet. -- The division is close to completing an SLO for every course. Business/O. Hadley -- Division is making substantial progress for completing SLOs for all courses and should be finished by November/December. Health Sciences and Athletics/K. Holt -- Committee has not yet met, but has received a summary from Spring and a list of tasks to be completed this semester. -- K. Holt will work with the dean to obtain an update on Athletics. Student Services/L. Gallucci -- C. Lee chairs the SLO committee for Student Services. -- The committee plans to meet monthly. -- Currently, the only area that does not have an SLO identified for all their programs is Community Advancement. All other areas have proposals – ECC is close to 40% with ongoing evaluation; 7% at CEC. 3. Plan for Assessment of Student Learning Week The main focus of ASL week will be on meeting deadlines. Flex time is allowed. The tentative schedule for Assessment of Student Learning Week is as follows: Monday (11/2), 2:30-4:00 p.m. Tuesday (11/3), 1:00-2:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday (11/4-5) Friday (11/6) Campus-wide training sessions Campus-wide training sessions Breakout sessions Mini-conference and general wrap-up On Monday and Tuesday, J. Simon, with the support of a couple representatives, will be available for Q & A and to work with various groups. Breakout sessions could include workshops on -- statement writing -- developing an assessment plan -- discussing core competencies assessment On Wednesday and Thursday, faculty should plan to work together within their own division, and can set their own time to meet on these days. On Friday, a brief general session will be scheduled with a couple breakout sessions, depending on where people are in the process. Suggestions for breakout sessions were noted as follows: -- assessment -- completing the form (It was noted that instructions for completing the form is located on the website.) -- program SLO session and how to link it to course SLOs and align it with core competencies . Breakout sessions are “working” sessions and faculty should be encouraged to bring their laptop computers. J. Simon will check the availability of the computer lab and training room in the Staff Development area. 4. Core Competency Assessment Discussion was held regarding the different models adopted for core competency assessment, combining course-level results, student surveys, and mapping course/program SLOs. The first core competency that will be assessed in “communication.” The assessment will combine several of these models. The following core competencies have already been identified: -- Communication and Comprehension -- Content Knowledge -- Critical and Analytical Thinking -- Professional and Personal Growth -- Community and Collaboration An “Information Literacy” competency has not yet been adopted, but will be discussed at future meetings. 2 3
