COURSE DESCRIPTION AND PREREQUISITES
Algebra I covers the use of numbers, sets, variables, properties of the real number systems, the
use of signed numbers, solving linear equations and inequalities, the four basic operations on
polynomials and rational expressions, irrational numbers and the development of the ability to read,
interpret and solve problems. Upon completion of the course, the student is required to take a
state-mandated “End-Of-Instruction Test” (EOI). The score is reported on the student’s official
transcript and must be passed to graduate.
PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT
The following homework, quizzes, and tests will focus on the above Objectives.
Homework: The student will be expected to read and study the chapter and have the
assigned problems completed on the due dates. The solutions to the assigned problems will be given
in class on or after the due date. The student will be expected to correct his/her own papers. THE
ONLY WAY TO LEARN THE MATERIAL IS TO COMPLETE ALL HOMEWORK. Homework will be
collected or audited in class and graded. Late work will not be accepted!
*If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to get your make up work the day you return.
Homework/Quizzes and Tests will make up 80% of the total grade.

Comprehensive Semester Test: The semester test will be worth 20% of the semester
grade.
*NO EXTRA CREDIT IS GIVEN*
CLASS ATTENDANCE
Attendance in class is expected. Attendance is required and will be taken each class session. If
you know you’re going to be gone, please let me know in advance. Remember once a student reaches
11 absences in a semester, they will automatically receive a NO CREDIT.

Cheating or the appearance of cheating will not be tolerated. Each student will do all of
his/her own work unless group project is assigned.
No talking when teaching is going on.
Hall passes will be limited – 2 per 9 weeks. Must have agenda and ID to leave classroom.

Take notes (you may use notes on quizzes!)
SUGGESTIONS:
 Come to class every day.
 Pay attention; take notes and work along with the instructor.
 Work homework the day it is assigned while it is fresh in your mind.
 As the homework is reviewed in class, ask questions!
 Rework homework until you have a thorough understanding of the concepts.
 After you have worked the homework and asked questions in class, if you still don’t
understand, see the instructor for help.
 Ask questions!
 If you need extra help, let me know in advance. I can be available before and after school.
