Biome Model
This portion of the assignment must be completed at home.
The following is a detailed description of how to create your biome model.
Goal: Build a 3-dimensional model of your biome using everyday materials.




Plan for the type of biome to be built and select the appropriate materials. Refer to text books, internet
and nature programs to find out about the types of plants, animals and terrain associated with your
biome. The material required to build a biome model will vary according to the type of environment.
o For example a forest biome will require dense foliage, while a desert biome will require sand and
rocks.
Construct the biome in a box from the bottom up (any box; shoebox, cereal box, mailing box, etc…).
The inside walls should be decorated (painted, collaged, with photos, etc.).
o Paint the interior of the box with a background to match the specific terrain and allow it time to
dry.
Included in the model should be representative examples of plants, animals, and landforms.
o Construct the ground terrain using sand, dirt or other material to simulate the environment of
the biome. Use clay, sand, craft paper or balled up newspaper to make rocky terrains or sea
beds.
o Construct plants and other foliage from sticks and craft paper. Cut out animal shapes from craft
paper or form them from modeling clay. Use wire to suspend fish from the bottom of the box to
simulate ocean depths. Hang birds from the top of the box with string or wire to simulate flight.
Clear plastic wrap can be used to cover the front of the box to simulate water for an aquatic
biome.

Taped to one side of the box (outside) should be a typed description of all the characteristics of the
biome.

Taped to another side of the box (outside) should be a world map indicating (by color, outline, etc.) the
locations of this biome.

Observe and view the model from different angles and adjust the materials and items wherever needed
for best view and balance. Ensure everything is glued down firmly.
Tip

Common white craft glue is an excellent adhesive for a biome project. White glue will bond dirt, sand, paper and
many other dissimilar items. Clean up is simple using a wet, soapy cloth.
