EL CAMINO COLLEGE Office of the Vice President – Academic Affairs NOTES – AREA COUNCIL 22 MARCH 2012 Present: F. Arce, T. Bui, D. Charman, A. Cornelio, A. Minasian, E. Munoz, D. Thompson, A. Valle I. DISCUSSION/ACTION A. Winter Calendar: The Board approved the winter session for the 2012-13 academic year. Thereafter, there will not be a winter session. For 2013-14, the fall semester will be 8/24-12/13/14. Flex day for spring will be 1/16/14. The spring semester will be 1/18-5/16/14. The goal is to have two 6-week sessions and one 8-week session in the summer. The 6-week sessions will be 5/21-7/2 and 7/7-8/14; the 8-week session will be 6/16-8/7. B. BP/AP 4225 – Course Repetition: Academic Senate will have its second reading at the next Senate meeting. The state and Chancellor’s Office has become more restrictive on course repetition and the number of times a student can repeat a course. More changes will take place next year. The student success initiative is being considered for a law. Students are encouraged to have an education plan, assessment, attend orientation, maximum limit of units, and limited time in basic skill courses. How students enroll in classes will become more regimented and will develop better prepared students. ECC has approximately 2,000-2,500 education plans every fall. It was noted that the College enrolls 5,000-7,000 which indicates not all students are being reached. Registration priority will change as students with over limit of units or have a degree will receive lower priority in registration. Students with no education plan or degree/certificate goal will lose priority also. Students on probation will be required to go through mediation and develop an education plan. Presently, there are 3,000 students on probation. By fall 2013, there will be student success legislations implemented. C. Employment Application: There was some concern about modifying the employment application with a writing assignment. Dr. Arce indicated it was the decision of each screening committee to develop and prepare questions for selection committees. II. INFORMATION A.
