Meg Panlaqui wants to move 5.5 and 5.7 with Vito Iaia into the ASO member reports, but Vito Iaia requested 5.5 and 5.7 be moved past 5.11 instead. Motion to approve agenda as Amended of October 14, 2010 made by Chloe Smith. Vito Iaia Seconds. Motion passed. V. New Business 5.1 Winter Session Elimination Dr. Nishime came to announced that there is a discussion to eliminate the winter session; however, no decision has been made to do so as of yet. If this were to take effect it would not change fall semester, but spring would be. Without winter, spring would start possibly on January 17 and end May 17. There will instead be 2 summer semesters. The reason some people want this elimination is due to the lack of classes that can be taken during the winter. Classes above 4 units are not supported during the winter session; however, summer can and does support end level units. El Camino’s semesters last longer than standard college’s timeline. This will help shorten the main semesters. It is also believed that help stable the student enrollment during the spring. Jessica Lopez asked about the transfer students and their needing winter session, to help them be able to transfer sooner. Without winter they may have to wait another year to transfer. Dr. Nishimes response was that if students were smart they should plan out their classes ahead of time with the campus counselors so this change would not affect them. Also winter session is relatively new here at El Camino College, having only offered since 2003 with two years cut due to the budget. Vito Iaia asked if it was to be implemented, when the plan would be announced, Vito is concerned about disrupting current students’ schedules with back to back summers. As before Dr. Nishime said it is not final, it is simply being discussed. Jessica Lopez believes this is not in the best interest of the students and wants to create a petition from students to stop winter sessions elimination. 5.2 Flu Shots Debbie Conover states that due to its great success last year, there will be a free flu shots for students for the week of November 2nd.This health center service should be taking place on Tuesday and Thursday starting at 12:30pm. Faculty will however have to pay for the flu shots. Melina Mossberg asked if H1N1 will be included with these flu shots, and that she wished to work with Mrs. Conover. Debbie responded with, yes they are no Page 2 of 6 longer separate shots and it will take two weeks for our bodies to build an immunity. Also that she was looking forward to working with Melina. 5.3 Finance Committee Items Motion to approve up to an additional $250 from the AS supplies account (7155001-00-836101-7670) to for the Senate office. Made by Ryuichiro Enomoto. The total then being used for the senate office would be $500 and this amount would be used in the following way: $150 directly for office supplies (pens, paper, printer ink, paper clips, staplers & staples, etc.) $100 for a new couch, the current couch is too old and hard to clean. A newer couch would bring a more welcoming atmosphere. $50 for a coffee table. This table’s purpose is not solely for serving coffee, but it can bring the office more relaxation when used with the couch and can be used for anything. Since ASO members are students it could be used to place books on and study, too. $50 for an all-in-one printer, allowing the senate office to be able to scan, copy important documents, and print them out without needing to go through the copy center. $150 for miscellaneous items such as a filling cabinet, dry-erase board, picture frames, or even a rug, etc. Discussion: Vito Iaia wanted to know if this would be unnecessarily taking funds from other ASO accounts and if this will affect the ASO as a whole. Patrick Howard was able to find all the items on Craig’s list and intends to use it to buy the above items. Jessica Lopez thinks it is a good idea because the executive office looks nicer than the senate office due to money being used to make it better. The senate office has had no money spent to make it look any better. Motion passed. Rio Enomoto says that for the Mocktail event to work, it needs the following: $400 from the AS General Division account (71-55001-00-836104-7670) and $80 from the AS Hospitality account (71-55001-00-836365-7670) for a combined total of $480 to cover all related expenses Meg Panlaqui wants to know why we should approve the money to this event if the event itself has not even been approved yet. Rebekka Asher says the event is being used for voter awareness, it will offer a good social setting with music, food, drinks, promote voting and it is also a fundraiser for the ASO. Tickets will be sold at $2 and an addition $1 for drinks after the first. Jessica Lopez wants this event because of the upcoming election on Nov. 2nd, this event should give students information about each political party Motion to approve the event of “The Toast of El Camino” made by Jessica Lopez. Seconded by Nichole Reinertsen. Page 3 of 6 Discussion: Vito Iaia wants to know if this is going to be a workshop and Jessica Lopez explained that the ASO should be able to effectively explain both sides of the political parties. Meg Panlaqui believes there should not be ticket sales because it will likely redecrease attendance to the event. Jessica Lopez moves to table the Mocktail Event 5.10 under 5.3 to the next Senate meeting. Vito Iaia seconds. Damien McDowell supports Jameel, saying he does a great job organizing the senators sending e-mails to get things rolling. Heather Barone asks if Jameel will still keep his current postion as senator of business? Jameel Younis answers yes. Motion to approve Jameel Younis as Senate Leader. Page 4 of 6 5.10 “Mocktail” Event Moved to 5.3 Finance Committee Items. 5.11 Restroom Maintenance Proposal Damien McDowell says that inside the Men’s bathrooms, doors are missing due to vandalism. In one bathroom there are no doors at all to the stalls. Damien says this is a big privacy issue. Motion to make every restroom on campus to have doors for the stalls, made by Damien McDowell. Seconded by Jessica Lopez. Motion Passed 5.5 Senate Bill Vito Iaia states that all students with A.A or A.S degrees, or students with 60 units and a 2.0 GPA are guaranteed to be able to transfer to a CSU; however, this does not mean they will get into the campus of their choice. The application process still applies. Vito says this will increase the already high competition between students and they will need to become even more unique and standout even more in order to be accepted at these schools; making it much harder for transfer students. The intent of this bill was to further the general education of the average student here in California. Attempting to give everyone a chance at a better life for themselves and helping those families in which no one has gone to college. Vito Iaia urges Senators to let people know what this bill truly represents. 5.7 Math Contest Vito Iaia announces that there will be a math contest held in the West Conference room on Fridays 10-11 with Mr. Firooz. This contest is also a tutoring session that will be made fun, so students will learn easier and develop a stronger math base. There will be prizes that will have been donated. VI.
