Strategic purpose statement
The purpose of this qualification is to provide Aotearoa
New Zealand with graduates who have foundation skills
and knowledge related to creative writing principles and
processes, and an understanding of professional practice
within the writing sector.
The qualification is for Level 3 school leavers, for returning
students, and for those seeking to gain basic skills to
further their own writing projects or to work as freelance
operators.
Graduates will be able to work at an entry/supervised level
in various writing/assistant roles within the industry or to
work on their own writing projects.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:
 Apply research and idea-development techniques to
gather and collate a body of information for use in
written outputs.
 Select and apply foundation writing principles and
processes to construct original and effective texts for
print or digital platforms for an identified audience,
readership, or market.
 Explore own creativity in a range of writing contexts.
 Research the writing sector, creative industries, the
freelance market and writing opportunities
(competitions, awards), the principles of professional
practice and legal considerations, with a view to
exploring future writing options.

Education pathway
This qualification provides a pathway to the New Zealand
Diploma in Writing for Creative Industries (Level 5) [Ref:
3408].
Employment pathway
Graduates of this qualification will be able to work as
writing assistants in a supervised capacity, as junior writers
in industry teams (advertising, councils, and professional
organisations) and be able to work on their own writing
projects.

This qualification can be awarded by any education
organisation that has an approved programme of study or
industry training programme leading to the qualification.
Evidence requirements for
assuring consistency
Evidence of the following may be provided for consistency
reviews:
 Effective internal and external moderation processes,
including internal moderation results relating to graduate
outcomes
 Feedback on the courses, and actions taken by the
education organisation in response to such feedback.
Sources of feedback must include graduates, current
students, tutors/assessors, and graduate destinations
(such as employers, next programme provider, the
community/other stakeholders).
 Portfolios of work.
 Samples of assessment materials.
 Samples of learner work.
 Programme completion data and course results.
 Moderation outcomes which may include moderation /
benchmarking across common programmes.
 Graduate surveys.

The programme design, including assessment, must reflect
the interconnectedness of the graduate outcomes and the
norms of creative writing principles and professional
practices within the writing sector.
Providers of this qualification must ensure that:

Information is provided about health and safety at the
keyboard
Delivery is current and relevant through engagement
with stakeholders
Programmes may be developed based on Maori principles
and values, and are intended to enable Wānanga to meet
obligations under the Education Act (1989, Section 162).
