Medical Withdrawal FAQ’s
Q. How do I initiate the medical withdrawal process?
A. Visit the office of withdrawal and admission website:
http://www.albany.edu/withdrawalreadmission/
Q. Does any medical condition qualify for a medical withdrawal?
A. No, only those medical conditions which clearly disable a student from attending classes and
completing class assignments over an extended period of time would qualify for a medical
withdrawal.
Q. How do I know if my medical condition would qualify for a medical withdrawal?
A. As soon as you are considering a medical withdrawal you should contact Student Health
Services (518-956-8400) to discuss your situation. At this time any medical documentation you
have should be forwarded to Student Health Services as well.
Q. If I complete a semester but realize I should have applied for a medical withdrawal after the
semester has ended, is it too late to get a medical withdrawal?
A. Retroactive medical withdrawals are rarely granted. Since a student applying for a
retroactive medical withdrawal has been partaking in class assignments, it would suggest they
were not disabled from attending classes and participating in their academic responsibilities.
Documentation must prove an impairment so debilitating that it explains both the need for
withdrawal and the delay in requesting the withdrawal. An example might be an extended
hospitalization followed by a prolonged recovery period.
Students should contact Undergraduate Office of Withdrawal and Reentry to explore other
options available to the student.
Q. if I am denied a medical withdrawal, but believe I deserve one, what further actions can I
take?
A. Since all decisions by the UAlbany Student Health Services Medical Director as well as the
Counseling Center Director are final, the only course of action available is to provide any
additional medical documentation you may have failed to include originally.
Q. How is the exact date of the medical withdrawal determined by the Medical Director?
A. The exact date of disability and hence the withdrawal date is determined by the available
medical records as well as documented class participation.
Q. How does a medical withdrawal affect my on-campus housing situation?
A. Once your medical withdrawal has been approved you will need to bring that paperwork to
the Department of Residential Life located in the basement of Eastman Tower on State Quad. A
‘Release from Residence’ form must be completed and a copy of the withdrawal paperwork will
be taken and attached. To check out of your room you must remove all your belongings and
return your key to the Quad Information Center of the Quad or Apartment Complex you live in,
within 48 hours. Failure to do so will result in a bill for key replacement. The staff on the
Quad/Apartment will complete your check out process by taking your keys and verifying your
belongings are removed from the room. This will constitute the official ‘Date of Checkout’, and
will be used to determine any room and/or meal plan refunds, if qualified.
