Paper Wasp
Family: Vespidae
Paper wasps gather fibers from plant stems and decaying wood to construct their
nests. They mix the material with saliva to create water-resistant, gray-brown,
paper nests with open cells for brood rearing and a thin stalk for anchoring.
22 species of paper wasps have been identified in North America, and about 300
have been identified worldwide.
