Lesson: Value of Castration
Vocabulary Words and Definitions
1. Castration:
The removal of the testicles (the male sex glands) or a procedure that prevents the
male from delivering sperm.
2. Androgens:
The hormones that control the appearance and development of masculine sex
characteristics.
3. Testosterone:
The primary androgen (hormone) produced in the testicles.
4. Libido:
The drive to mate.
5. Atrophy:
The shrinking of an organ, tissue, or other body parts. (i.e. The testicle atrophies
in about 6 weeks when you use an emasculatome (burdizzo).)

Classroom Activity
Purpose:
The purpose of this activity is to introduce to the students a method of castration.
Activity Directions:
Your teacher will bring in a male animal (boar, bull, ram lamb, etc.) and demonstrate how
they (teacher's choice) castrate this particular animal.
Observe the castration method carefully and answer the questions on the Student Activity
worksheet completely.
Materials Needed:
1. Notes from class.
2. Male animal (boar, ram lamb, bull calf).
3. Paper.
4. Pencil.
Notes to the Teacher:
In this activity, you choose the animal that will be castrated and the method in which this
procedure will be accomplished.
If desired, you may want to dissect the testicle and epididymis to show your students what
they look like.
