If you choose to enrich and follow the expanded activities below, you should plan for at least 5 hours of class time. TOPIC PRESENTATION: SHOWMANSHIP 233.1 _____________________________________________________________ ACTIVITY: Have a lamb in front of the class as the students come in, with fitting equipment set up on a desk or table. Explain to the students that in order to take livestock to the fair that students must learn how to properly fit and show their livestock. _____________________________________________________________ I. Fitting Livestock ___________________________________________________________ ACTIVITY: A. Demonstrate Fitting Livestock 1. You may want to take three separate days to demonstrate three different species of livestock, starting with lambs (if pressed for time do only one species). 2. Provide any handouts and require students to take notes on fitting, with activities proceeding slowly enough for them to record all important activities. B. Discussion/Demonstration 1. As fitting proceeds, breaks can be taken to discuss what has been learned, and to allow students to practice the techniques they are seeing. ___________________________________________________________ II. Showing Livestock (you will need some kind of "show ring area") ___________________________________________________________ ACTIVITY: A. Demonstrate proper showing of one to three livestock species (depending on time available) B. Discussion/Demonstration 1. While showing is being demonstrated, call on students to come into the ring to demonstrate showing, as well as "judging" while others are in the ring. In one 50 minute period, 20 minutes could be dedicated to demonstration and 30 minutes to practice. ___________________________________________________________ 233.2 III. (Possible enrichment) Have a "mini-fair". ______________________________________________________ ACTIVITY: A. If kids don't have animals they can show, you may be able to make arrangements with local ranchers to once again "borrow" livestock for fitting and showing--this could be a good P.R. tool for the department, since you could invite the community out to the fair, recognizing ranchers who have donated livestock--this might also be a good time to put on the annual BBQ (suggest you do this at lunch time so non ag students can observe also). ______________________________________________________ 233.3
