Course Description:
An overview of the skills and knowledge necessary for the field of esthetics.
Skin Care history, basic facial treatments, basic makeup application, and hair removal
application.

Course Focus:
The central focus of this class is to introduce the student to the anatomy, physiology related to
facial and esthetics. The student is introduced to basic facial machines, steamers, and woods
lamp as well as safety and sanitation measures will be stressed. The student is introduced to
facial manipulations, cleansing, toning, and makeup application.
Course Content – SCANS:
The Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) has identified (1) reading,
(2) writing, (3) mathematics, (4) speaking and listening, (5) thinking skills, (6) personal qualities,
(7) workplace competencies and (8) basic use of computers as competencies required to enter
employment. These skills are motivation to learn, basic skills, communication, teamwork, critical
thinking, career development and leadership. HCCS is committed to preparing every student
with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in today’ dynamic work environment.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of skin structure.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of products used in facial treatments.
3. Demonstrate techniques used in the application of skin care.
4. Demonstrate effective communication skills.
5. Demonstrate professionalism.
6. Demonstrate safety and sanitation skills using all facial equipment.
7. Demonstrate basic steps used in make-up application and hair removal.

Professionalism:
Professionalism includes participation in all class activities, as well as positive interpersonal
interaction with instructors, other students and customers; dependability in assuming
student role; appropriate use of constructive criticism; recognition of limitations in areas
needing assistance; and professional appearance (proper uniform and personal grooming is
required at all times). The student is responsible for all class participation.

Professionalism is tied to attendance. A student will not be allowed to clock in unless
he/she is in proper uniform and well groomed.

LAB WORK
This class is a skill intensive, fast paced and it requires that student attend class each day in
order to complete their assigned projects. All assigned projects, collective or individual
must be completed on time. There is a 20 point grade drop for late assigned projects.

Students who come to class not willing to participate in the instructions for the day will be
asked to clock out….
Attendance and Participation Policies:
The faculty believes that experiences in the classroom and laboratory cannot be
adequately duplicated if a student is absent. In addition, the Esthetics Program is designed to
teach good work habits, such as attendance. Excessive absences in either lecture or lab will
result in an automatic drop from the Program. If prior to “W” day a “W” will be recorded in lieu
of a grade, if after “W” day a grade of “F” will be recorded.

WITHDRAWALS
It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw officially from a course to keep from receiving
an “F” for the class.
Any absences during either semester exceeding 16 hours will be considered excessive
and will place a student on probation for the remainder of the semester. A limited number of
make-up hours will be offered for the program (on as needed basis only). Students will be
required to maintain their attendance until the completion of the course (750 clock hours).
Students are responsible for making up any work missed due to absences. Arrangements must be
made with the instructor for make-up work prior to the absence or within one day of each
absence.
MAKE-UP-POLICY FOR MISSED ASSIGNMENTS OR TESTS
There will be no make-up for missed unit exams! Make-up for a missed mid-term or final test
will be permitted only if the student informs the instructor in advance. The student must
make arrangements to take the missed mid-term or final test no later than 3 days after the
original test date. It should be understood that the make-up test would not be the same as
the test given to the rest of the student body.

A project that is not turned in on the designated date will receive a 20-point
reduction for each day that is late.
Students who fail to take the Final Exam on the assigned day w/out faculty
approval will receive a 10 pt. deduction on the final grade.
Each Tuesday you will have a test on the chapter covered. Each test will consist
of 1-30 questions. Read your book and review the daily assignments.
Pop quizzes will be given threw out the semester unannounced.

The Faculty and the Dean will consider hardship situations individually. Only catastrophic
illnesses or accidents constitute a hardship situation, and even extreme situations may not be
accommodated since students cannot meet program outcomes and course hours without
attending all sessions. It is recommended that students attend all make-up sessions available to
them in order to preclude the possibility of being dropped from the program due to unforeseen
circumstances.
STUDENT DISMISSALS:
Re-admission Policy: A student who withdraws from the Esthetics program may be readmitted only once with the recommendation of the department faculty-providing space is
available in the class.
Students are expected to assume the responsibility for learning. Your instructor will assist you,
but the actual responsibility rests with you. Students are also expected to devote their energy to
attaining the skills and knowledge required for their particular career goals.
REMINDER:
** It is college policy that telephone calls/messages are accepted for students ONLY in
the case of an emergency
No electronic devices are allowed in the classroom or lab, no IPods, I pads, Lap Tops, etc. Cell
phones are to be turned off and placed in your locked lockers. Students may use cell phones
at break and lunch time.
Academic Integrity:
The college’s academic integrity policy states, HCC is committed to a high standard of academic
integrity in the academic community. In becoming a part of the academic community, students
are responsible for honesty and independent effort. Failure to uphold these standards includes,
but is not limited to, the following:
1. Plagiarizing written work or projects.
2. Cheating on exams or assignments.
3. Collusion on an exam or project.
4. Misrepresentation of credentials or prerequisites when registering for a course.”
Students are expected to conduct themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling the course
requirements. Any student found cheating on a test, plagiarizing or in collusion will receive an
“F” for the assignment and the course and will be dropped from the program. See student
handbook for college policy on academic dishonesty and disciplinary problems. This level of
development in a students’ training is crucial to their professional development and success;

any student that is disruptive or disrespectful will be dismissed from the program. Students on
the client floor are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner. Loud boisterous
conduct or refusing to serve a client will constitute grounds for dismissal from the program.
STUDENT SERVICES
Learning Resources Centers:
The Learning Resources Centers (LRC) at each college provides print and non-print resources
and services for students. The materials have been selected to serve the curricular, vocational,
and recreational needs of the college community. Each college LRC provides computer access to
a variety of information in electronic form including bibliographic indexes to journals, Internet
resources, and multimedia publications.
Students with Disabilities:
HCCS has a Disability Support psychological counselor and office located at each of its five
colleges. Students with physical and learning/developmental disabilities may request
accommodations and special equipment through these offices. For specific program information,

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO OUR STUDENTS
Houston Community College Cosmetology Program welcomes all students to join its
educational program. Our requirements of all of our students are specifically designed to
ensure 1.) The integrity and quality of the educational environment, 2.) the safety of our
students, faculty and staff, 3.) that each of our student have the capacity to benefit from the
education we provide. With this in mind, the following are our expectations of our students.

d. Maintain strong class attendance
e. Maintain a positive attitude and respect all instructors and fellow classmates

g. Dress in an appropriate professional manner including clean uniforms, shoes,
make-up and hair groomed neatly.
h. Refrain from loud boisterous language and or profanity or any behavior that
disrupts the learning environment.

COURSE OUTLINE: 1421/PRINCIPLES OF FACIAL/ESTHETIC TECHNOLOGY 1

Week 1: Students will understand the function, composition and types of skin,
students will learn the difference between the disorders and diseases of the skin.
Week 2: Learn the parts of the facial machine and explain their purpose
Week 3: Learn the parts of the facial steamer and woods lamp and explain
purpose
Week 4 &5: Students will learn how to take proper care and safety procedures for
using the facial lamps, steamers and direct current facial machine
Week 6 &7: Review for Mid-Term
Week 8: Mid-Term
Week 9: Students will learn the steps on how to do a basic facial.
Week 10: Students will be able to demonstrate the steps and techniques
Used during a facial massage.
Week 11: Identify the functions of the skin and related structures; classify
compare and contrast the disorders and diseases of the skin. Identify the parts
of the facial equipment (steamers, woods lamp, facial machines) used and the
purpose in performing facial treatment.
Week 12: Identify the difference between temporary and permanent hair removal
Week 13: The techniques used for temporary hair removal.
Week 14: Explain the basic steps used during a makeup application.
Week 15: Review for Final Exam
Week 16: Students will set up for the procedure for a facial service application,
including all safety, and sanitation guideline, for final exam practicum and written exam.
The instructor has the right to change the syllabus as circumstances may occur!!
