The New LOOK
A Change of Perceptions of Gender and
Citizenship Rights in Egypt
Sahar Hegazi
The Norm
“Of course…I come first in everything,
I am the man”
So
Women are Second…..because “they
need to be protected / Cared for…and
hence they come second…”
The Script
As a man “I am entitled to more
rights”
“I can do what I want and only accept
to do certain things “
“And not to do other things…”
The Expectations
“That is what it means to be a man…
“Be powerful, in control as the head of the house”
I am caring for my significant others, I am the
provider of my family so I deserved to be treated
as royal”
“Women best place is home…”
“I have seen my father like this and my mother
lived OK”
But..this is also what it means to
be a woman
Obedient: “I should follow what my husband says”
In Charge: “Manage all the 10 balls in my hand at once”
Caring for my man: “Put him as 1 priority….OR?”
It is his responsibility: “Just stay home…”
Is this true?
After all laws, modernization,
agreements, conventions signed,
CEDAW, ….
Yes
We say what we don’t always do
behind the closed doors
Can we meet in the Middle?
Of course we can…
But we have to Want First
Good news
Some may want….for different
reasons
