The New LOOK A Change of Perceptions of Gender and Citizenship Rights in Egypt Sahar Hegazi The Norm “Of course…I come first in everything, I am the man” So Women are Second…..because “they need to be protected / Cared for…and hence they come second…” The Script As a man “I am entitled to more rights” “I can do what I want and only accept to do certain things “ “And not to do other things…” The Expectations “That is what it means to be a man… “Be powerful, in control as the head of the house” I am caring for my significant others, I am the provider of my family so I deserved to be treated as royal” “Women best place is home…” “I have seen my father like this and my mother lived OK” But..this is also what it means to be a woman Obedient: “I should follow what my husband says” In Charge: “Manage all the 10 balls in my hand at once” Caring for my man: “Put him as 1 priority….OR?” It is his responsibility: “Just stay home…” Is this true? After all laws, modernization, agreements, conventions signed, CEDAW, …. Yes We say what we don’t always do behind the closed doors Can we meet in the Middle?
