6. Reason for this curriculum action:
There are two objectves for this curriculum action. The first objective is to significantly strengthen the CC degree with
the addition of NURS 16, 6 credits. This change brings the Medical Assistant I CC more in line with employer
requirements for a stronger clinical focus.
The second objective is to provide more flexibility and to remove some unnecessary barriers that have made it difficult
for students to complete this certificate within the one-year time frame. By offering a choice between BUS 120 and
BUSN 161 we are making the Medical Assistant I CC consistent with the Business Technology CC which already offers
this choice. Because BUSN 161 is only offered once per year while BUS 120 is offered every semester and is available
over Cable TV, this change will improve student access to the class when they need it. Additional scheduling flexibility
is added by offering the choice between BUSN 150 and ICS 101. BUSN 189, Business Math, has also led to delays for
students who do not meet its prerequisites. The BUSN 189 class will still be required for the AAS degree but is not
needed for the Medical Assistant I CC since none of the classes needed for this certificate have a math requirement. The
number of credits for BUSN 193v have been reduced from 3 to 1 to provide a work experience component that is
adequate for the CC degree. The AAS degree requires 1 additional credit of BUSN 193v. The addition of ENG 100 as
an option allows the students to take the higher level course if they are qualified. ENG 100 is required for the Business

Technology CC and will be needed for those who go on to complete the AAS degree. Because NURS 16 includes the
content covered in NURS 10 the NURS 10 class is no longer needed.
