Curriculum proposal number____________________ Curriculum Action Request (CAR) (Form 4-93) - Maui Community College Data for Curriculum Committee and college catalog 1. Author(s)___BK. Griesemer, Rick Miller_____________________________________________ 2. Date submitted to Curriculum Committee___October 27, 2003_____________ General type of action? __course _X_program b. Specific type of action Addition __regular __experimental __ other (specify) _____________ Deletion __course __from program __program __other (specify) _____________ Modification __number/alpha __title __credits __description __prerequisites __corequisites _X_program __other (specify) _____________ 4. Reason for this curriculum action: A. To consolidate and update the existing Business Careers program. The revised program consolidates the program and course offerings, providing the three specialization areas as Certificates of Competence rather than as distinct AAS degrees. (See B below for additional information.) This makes the program more efficient and effective. The number of electives has been increased allowing students with different interests to utilize the program. It also allows the deletion of courses that have not been taught for many semesters, or have only been taught infrequently, or never taught. This will help with student program and degree planning. Additionally, it allows the program to concentrate its limited resources to better serve students. Separate CAR forms have been prepared for each deleted course. These courses are BUS 225, BUS 245, BUS 295, MGT 120, MKT 130, and MKT 170. Option I reflects the requirements for the AAS degree program. (See attached program and separate CAR forms.) B. To add to the program two new Certificates of Competence, one in Marketing and one in eMarketing. With these additions, there will be two Certificates of Competence in each of the three specialization areas: Entrepreneurship, Marketing, and Supervision. This new format provides a ladder approach, which will be easier for the program faculty and students to understand and to utilize in program/degree planning. It allows the variety in the program to remain while improving delivery. It provides the opportunity to take a course or courses and receive Certificates in an area or areas of interest. This will help community members and non-majors who are interested in a specific area(s). Separate CAR forms have been prepared for the two new Certificates of Competence. (See attached program and separated CAR forms.) C. To update the Business Careers program/ UH - West Oahu articulation option to better reflect the path students are taking toward a BABA degree completed at UHWO. The BUSCR program/degree is presently articulated with UHWO under an extension of the previous articulation. The revision has been reviewed by the Outreach Counselor for the University Center and the Dean of Students at UHWO and will go through UHWO’s curriculum process to reaffirm the articulation agreement. Option II reflects the pre-UHWO requirements. (See attached program.) 612930855 D. To modify the Business Careers program to accommodate the PROPOSED ABIT baccalaureate degree. This modification will provide considerable overlap between the AAS Business Careers degree/program and the first two years of the PROPOSED ABIT program/degree. This builds on the college’s existing mission of granting Associate degrees. Option III reflects the ABIT requirements. (See attached program.) 5.
