COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: Introduces principles of pattern making for women's apparel through the manipulation of basic slopers. Covers the development of bodices, skirts, sleeves and collars. 3. GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES: DATE _______________ To provide students with fundamental knowledge in flat patternmaking skills by manipulating the basic sloper, including sewing construction and analysis of design and garment fit. 6. 7. 8. STUDENT LEARNER OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: a) Define basic terminology and symbols used in patternmaking. b) Demonstrate use of basic tools and supplies used in pattern making. c) Understand the purpose of the basic sloper and how it is used to create a variety of garment design details. d) Manipulate darts using the pivot, and slash and spread methods. e) Manipulate the sloper by applying the additional fullness principle. f) Manipulate the sloper by applying the contouring principle. g) Construct the garment details in fabric using a flat pattern. h) Demonstrate ability to recognize a good fitting garment on the figure. RECOMMENDED COURSE CONTENT: A. Introduction to patternmaking tools and pattern markings ( 1 hr.) B. Basic sloper development: bodices, skirts and sleeve (10 hrs.) C. Trueing and balancing seams D. Flat pattern principles (as applied to bodices) (40 hrs.) Dart manipulation - pivot method, slash and spread method Additional fullness Contouring E. Other garment details (25 hrs.) Basic shirt - buttons and buttonholes Collars Built-up necklines Sleeves Skirts Pants Pockets Torso foundation RECOMMENDED COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Specific course requirements are at the discretion of the instructor.
