Maui Community College Course Outline 1. Alpha and Number BUSN 122 Course Title Computer Keyboard Mastery Credits Two (2) Date of Outline October 20, 2005 2. Course Description Solves accuracy and speed problems in key boarding using an organized, systematic, and professional approach. Emphasizes diagnosing and correcting problems in key boarding techniques and skills. (Formerly BCIS 122.) 3. Contact Hours/Type Two (2) Hours/Lecture/Lab 4. Prerequisites BUSN 121; or consent. Corequisites Recommended Preparation Approved By Date 5. GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES: Designed to help individuals who have basic touch keyboarding to improve their keyboarding skills (technique, speed, and accuracy). Especially helpful to students who need to improve their skills before enrolling in higher level keyboarding courses and those preparing for employment tests. 6. SPECIFIC COURSE COMPETENCIES: A. Increase gross words a minute on two 5-minute straight copy tests by 5 to 15+ gross words a minute OR demonstrate average speeds of 50+ gwam on two 5-minutes tests. B. Increase net words a minute on at least two 5-minute straight copy tests by 5 to 15 nwam OR demonstrate average net scores of a minimum of 40 nwam on two tests. C. Increase net words a minute on at least two 1-minute mixed copy tests by 5 to 15+ nwam, OR complete two tests with an average of a minimum of 35 nwam. D. Complete all prescribed diagnostic and skill building assignments, practices, and tutorials 7. RECOMMENDED COURSE CONTENT: A. Pre-testing (2 hours) 1. Complete and record a 5-minute pre-test on straight copy to determine current keyboarding speed and accuracy. If speed is less than 30 gwam, refer to OAT 20BC. 2. Complete and record a 1-minute pre-test on mixed copy to determine speed and accuracy. If score is less than 10 nwam, refer to OAT20. B. Review of proper keyboarding technique and ergonomics - 1 hour C. Diagnose keyboarding strengths and weaknesses with diagnostic software and technique evaluation by instructor to establish short and long term keyboarding goals. - 2 hours D. Skillbuilding practice using computer software such as SouthWestern’s Skillbuilding on specific weak areas and all keyboarding aspects such as numbers, symbols, alphabetic keys, punctuation, difficult reaches, concentration, frequently used words, etc. (20 hours in class - 20 hours outside of class) E. Post-Tests and Certifications - 2 hours 8. RECOMMENDED COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Specific course requirements are at the discretion of the instructor at the time the course is being offered. Suggested requirements might include, but are not limited to: Pre and post-tests on alphabetic and mixed copy. Diagnostic assignments Skillbuilding and corrective assignments Technique evaluations Lab and/or home practice 9. TEXT AND MATERIALS: SKILLBUILDING - Building Speed and Accuracy on the Keyboard - Second Edition, Eide, Rieck, Klemin, Glencoe, McGraw-Hill Publishers text and software. OFFICE PROFICIENCY AND CERTIFICATION (OPAC) or other software for pre and post testing on 5-minute alphabetic text allowing corrections. 10. EVALUATION AND GRADING: INCREASE IN GWAM, 5 MINUTE TIMED WRITINGS, ALPHA COPY (25%) (Error limit = 5) 2-test average + 15 = A + 10 = B + 5=C OR 2 test average of 60 gwam = A 2 test average of 55 gwam = B 2 test average of 45 gwam = C INCREASE IN NWAM, 5 MINUTES, ALPHA COPY (25%) (Error limit = 5) 2-test average +15 = A OR 2-test average of 50 nwam +10 = B 2-test average of 45 nwam +5= C 2-test average of 40 nwam INCREASE IN NWAM, 1 MINUTE, MIXED COPY (25%) (Error limit = 1) 2-test average +15 = A OR 2-test average of 45 nwam +10 = B 2-test average of 40 nwam + 5=C 2-test average of 35 nwam COMPLETION OF PRESCRIBED ASSIGNMENTS (25%) Note: BUS TECH majors must achieve a minimum of a C- grade on each section based upon the minimum speeds specified; i.e., 45 gwam, 40 nwam, and 35 nwam to pass. 11.
