NZQA registered unit standard 20766 version 2 Page 1 of 3 Title Describe forest management and log use in solid wood manufacturing Level 2 Credits 5 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe factors influencing forest management; describe factors that influence log grading; describe log flow and wood utilisation in the solid wood manufacturing sectors. Classification Wood Manufacturing - Generic Skills > Wood Manufacturing Foundation Skills Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes All performance criteria must be demonstrated and assessed in accordance with the reference text: Distance Learning Guide – Forestry Knowledge (Auckland: Competenz, 2002) and available from Competenz, PO Box 9005, Newmarket, Auckland 1149. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Describe factors influencing forest management. Evidence requirements 1.1 Advantages of using marginal land for forest growing against other land use options are described. Range 1.2 return on investment, species performance and acceptance in the market place. The importance of utilisation gains from the whole tree are described. Range improved log quality, higher usable volumes per log, and cost effective utilisation of by-products. 1.3 Increased log quality is linked with improved value recovery in down stream processing in solid wood, and wood panel manufacturing plants. 1.4 The matching of resource volumes and rotation times to meet product demand is explained. Competenz SSB Code 101571 New Zealand Qualifications Authority 2016 NZQA registered unit standard 20766 version 2 Page 2 of 3 1.5 Wood product requirements that influence silvicultural practices are identified. 1.6 Risks to the forest estate during the growth cycle are described. Outcome 2 Describe factors that influence log grading. Evidence requirements 2.1 Main tree species are matched to market products. Range trees species may include but are not limited to – Pinus Radiata, Douglas Fir, Eucalyptus, Cyprus species. 2.2 Parameters common to log specifications are identified and log classifications are described. 2.3 Log classifications are matched to wood products in the solid wood, and wood panel sectors. Outcome 3 Describe log flow and wood utilisation in the solid wood manufacturing sectors. Range description may include the use of flow diagrams to illustrate relationships Evidence requirements 3.1 Description identifies species and log grades used in the round wood and solid wood manufacturing sectors. 3.2 Description identifies product mix derived from input log grades in each of the sectors. 3.3 Description identifies by-products generated in each of the sectors and the reprocessing steps for each of these. 3.4 Description identifies market destinations for solid wood manufacturing products. 3.5 Description identifies product market values from raw logs to a selection of relevant finished products in dollars per tonne.
