Purpose
This unit standard is for people working in the wool scouring industry. People
credited with this unit standard are able to handle and store wool bales
safely, carry out receipt procedures for wool deliveries, carry out despatch
procedures for wool shipments and maintain records as required.

Elements and performance criteria
Element 1
Use safe work practices and identify hazards and potentially dangerous conditions during
handling and storage of wool bales.
Performance criteria
1.1
Clothing is appropriate to work being undertaken and meets workplace
requirements.
1.2
Work is carried out according to workplace safety procedures and OSH
requirements.
Range
hazardous conditions are identified and reported, machine in safe
working condition.
Element 2
Move bales from truck to store and/or store to truck.
Performance criteria
2.1
Bale hook is used in a manner that minimises risk of injury to person and
damage to bale.
2.2
Mechanical lifting equipment is used in a way that ensures no damage to
machinery and/or load being moved.
2.3
Bale is identified from markings and/or codes as being part of delivery.
2.4
All lifting is carried out according to safe lifting practices promoted by the
Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC).
Element 3
Initiate delivery of wool from store to scour.
Performance criteria
3.1
Instructions for release of wool and delivery to scour are given according to
workplace practice.
Range
3.2

Delays and problems with release of wool are reported according to workplace
practice.

Carry out wool receipt procedures.
Performance criteria
4.1
Paperwork is collected from delivery driver and handled according to workplace
practice.
4.2
Bales are checked against delivery documents to ensure no discrepancies.
4.3
Bales are stored according to work instruction.
4.4
Bales are stacked according to workplace practice.
4.5
Record keeping procedures conform to workplace practice.
Element 5
Carry out wool despatch procedures.

5.1
Bales are identified, markings and codes checked and bales moved to despatch
and/or assembly point and loaded according to work instruction and plant
procedure.
5.2
Bales are handled to prevent damage to outer bale packaging.
5.3
Record keeping procedures are completed according to workplace practice.
Please note
Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
