This unit standard is for people working in the weaving industry. People
credited with this unit standard are able to: explain the operation of a fringing
machine; produce a fringe efficiently and safely; identify and act on machine

Element 1
Demonstrate knowledge of fringing.
Performance criteria
1.1
Fringing machine sections are identified and described in terms of their function
and operation.
Range

large pitch comb, small pitch comb, needle, stroke limiting
mechanism.

Prepare and operate a fringing machine.
Performance criteria
2.1
Machine settings produce a fringe that meets plant efficiency and quality
standards.
2.2
Fabric is threaded according to machine requirement.
2.3
Fringing machine is operated in accordance with machine requirements and
plant operating procedures.

Fringing faults and machine malfunctions are identified and action taken to
rectify cause of the fault according to operating procedures.

3.2
Fringing machine is kept clear of oil and other contaminants so that the fabric
and yarns are not marked.

3.3
Fringing machine is cleaned at the end of a batch according to plant
requirement and in accordance with plant safety procedures.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated
authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against
unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.
Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register
credits from assessment against unit standards.
Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards
must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
